As sweet as she is cute, Willa originally came to the Arizona Humane Society as an owner surrender due to eviction in November of last year. Unfortunately, this sweet three-year-old Labrador mix is one of many pets who are sadly surrendered to Valley shelters due to community-wide struggles - including housing instability.

When Willa first arrived to the shelter, it was clear that she was confused on what was happening and in turn, extremely fearful at first. However, thanks to the expert care of the Arizona Humane Society's Behavior Team, the once frightened pup learned that people were there to care for her and she learned how to trust.

Once out of her shell, it became clear that Willa is nothing short of an absolute goofball! She loves to play with her favorite toys, going on walks and is a wiggle bottom from head to toe. This gorgeous girl is also extremely smart and knows tricks, is crate trained and a professional on the leash. Although she loves people and has lived with young kids before, Willa prefers to be the only pup in the home as she wants to be the queen of her castle.

Whimsical Willa's adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Visit this adorable girl at the Arizona Humane Society's Papago Park Campus or learn more at azhumane.org/adopt to give her the loving forever home she deserves.

Last year, more than 17,000 pets were brought in through the Arizona Humane Society’s Field Team, which consists of Emergency Animal Medical Technicians and Cruelty Investigators. One of those dear pets was sweet Carmen, a four-year-old American pit bull terrier who was rescued from cruelty earlier this month.

Carmen was originally seized by Phoenix Police after she and a few other dogs were found to be in need of medical care, which their previous owner was not providing. Upon evaluation in the Arizona Humane Society’s trauma hospital, it was found that she was suffering from a broken leg.

It was determined that this sweet girl was in need of an amputation as the leg was unable to be saved however she has remained her adorably goofy self while in the care of the shelter. Although she loves people and other dogs, Carmen will need a home where there are no cats or critters as she prefers her canine friends.

Carmen’s adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Visit this adorable girl at the Arizona Humane Society's Sunnyslope Campus or learn more at azhumane.org/adopt to give her the loving forever home she deserves.

Meals That Make Wishes Come True

At Ling’s Wok Shop, fresh, wok-fired Asian cuisine has long brought people together around the table. The Scottsdale restaurant is giving guests a new reason to dine with purpose through Cooking With a Cause, a three-month give-back campaign benefiting Make-A-Wish Arizona, the founding chapter of the international nonprofit that grants life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

Throughout February and March, a portion of proceeds from every dish ordered from Ling’s Favorites will be donated directly to Make-A-Wish Arizona. The campaign offers a simple way for guests to support children and families during some of the most challenging moments of their lives, simply by enjoying the bold, familiar flavors they already love.

“Make-A-Wish left a lasting impression on us,” Owner John Banquil said. “One of our longtime regulars served on the board, which introduced us to the organization, and after partnering with them last year, we knew this was something we wanted to continue. Their work is powerful, personal, and deeply rooted in our community.”

Make-A-Wish Arizona is celebrating 46 years of granting wishes in the state and has fulfilled more than 8,500 wishes since 1980. Last year alone, the organization granted a record-breaking 476 wishes, serving children across 15 counties and providing experiences that medical professionals say can improve emotional strength, resilience, and adherence to treatment.

“When local businesses step up, they help turn hope into reality for wish kids and their families,” said Jessica Haag, senior director of PR and marketing for Make-A-Wish Arizona. “Partnerships like this allow us to continue granting wishes that bring joy, strength, and a sense of possibility to children facing critical illness. Every meal ordered helps move us closer to the wish of every eligible child.”

Guests can participate in Cooking With a Cause by ordering any dish from Ling’s Favorites, the restaurant’s most popular entrées. Every plate served helps fund wishes that provide moments of joy, relief, and inspiration for children and families navigating complex medical journeys. For more information, visit lingswokshop.com or learn more about Make-A-Wish Arizona at arizona.wish.org.

Plant-Based Cooking Class Connects Nutrition and Wellness

Plant-based cooking is stepping out of the restaurant kitchen and into the heart of the community this month. On February 21, Loving Hut Vegan Cuisine will partner with Thrive and Rooted to host Powered by Plants, a free community nutrition class and live cooking demonstration at Desert West Community Center. The event invites Phoenix-area residents to explore how plant-based meals can support health, boost energy and fit real-life budgets without feeling intimidating or out of reach.

Running from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the program blends practical nutrition education with a live cooking demonstration led by Love Hut Owner Linh La. The class is part of Thrive and Rooted’s 2026 educational series focused on expanding access to plant-based wellness and sustainable living resources throughout the community, with sponsorship from Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation.

“For us, this is about showing up for the community in a real way,” Linh said. “We cook these foods every day for our guests and we see how plant-based meals can support health without being expensive or complicated. This class is about sharing that knowledge in a way that feels practical, supportive, and empowering.”

Founded by Jayme and John Williams, Thrive and Rooted is a community-driven nonprofit dedicated to making plant-based wellness and sustainable living accessible to all.

Inspired by the founders’ transition to a plant-based lifestyle in 2019, the organization has grown from a backyard garden into a broader mission centered on nutrition education, sustainable food practices and compassionate living. Through workshops, community gardens and cooking classes, the nonprofit helps individuals build practical skills and healthier routines.

“When we started Thrive and Rooted, we wanted to make wellness feel attainable and community-driven,” Jayme said. “Hosting this event during Black History Month is a reflection of that journey and our commitment to expanding conversations around plant-based nutrition, food access, and community health.”

The session will also include nutrition education from Rhyan Geiger, an award-winning registered dietitian and author specializing in plant-based nutrition. Together, the presenters will focus on how everyday food choices can support disease risk reduction, immune health and overall well-being while still working within busy schedules and realistic grocery budgets.

During the cooking demonstration, attendees will see recipes come together in real time, including Southwestern tofu scramble, Blissful Fried Rice and hearty vegetable pasta soup. Several dishes are gluten-free, and free samples will be available while supplies last. Blissful Fried Rice, one of Loving Hut’s top five best-sellers, also reflects the restaurant’s broader mission of compassion, as it is regularly prepared as complimentary meals for unhoused guests visiting Loving Hut locations.

Beyond food and education, the event will feature raffle prizes supporting local vegan businesses and nonprofit partners. Giveaways include artisan soaps from Strawberry Hedgehog, e-gift cards to select Loving Hut locations and a merchandise bag from Better Piggies Rescue.

The Powered by Plants class is free to attend, but registration is required and space is limited.
Howie is hoping there is a special family who will lend him a helping paw on his journey to finding a forever home! This sweet six-year-old pup has been in the care of the Arizona Humane Society since January of this year after he was rescued as an injured stray. Once in the shelter's Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital, it was discovered that he has severe hip dysplasia leading to extensive arthritis of is his joints.

Howie's quality of life is still great and he has a lot of love to give however due to his ongoing care needs, Arizona Humane Society veterinarians are hoping a special family out there will fall in love with this handsome gentleman just like everyone else has and be willing to not only give him the love and care he deserves but also willing to take on his future medical needs. Howie will also need a family that understands his physical restrictions including keeping him at a lean weight, no strenuous activity, running up and down stairs or jumping up and down to limit further damage to his joints.

As evidenced by everyone's adoration of this joyful pup, Howie has shown to be a very loving boy who gets along with everyone he meets and loves to be by his human's side. To ensure he has the most comfortable, loving forever home, Howie's adoption fee is waived for the person or family dedicated to giving him the love and care he deserves.

This year's theme is “Mixtape Magic,” a dedication to the tubular 80s. The gala is set to take place under the stars, with live entertainment and arcade games creating a retro atmosphere.

A variety of activations are planned, including “a large-scale vintage arcade with everything from Ms. Pac-Man to Whack-A-Mole, DJ spinning classic 80s hits, a host of iconic 1980s look-alikes including Cyndi Lauper and Madonna, and Glamour Shots.”

Rancher Hat Bar will be on-site, giving guests the opportunity to customize their own vintage trucker hat. There will also be live and silent auctions with a “gnarly” variety of packages and experiences up for grabs. After the cocktail reception, guests will move to the terrace for dinner and program emceed by auctioneer Bobby D.

"We will share success stories from individuals who have benefitted from the organization, host our paddle raiser and raffle, and then get dancing all night long,” Taj said.

Arizona-based cover band Rock Lobster will perform to set the groove in motion. The dress code for the evening is 80s prom - picture big hair, lots of accessories, bold colors and lots of patterns. Tickets start at $500. Learn more at Mixtape Magic | Child Crisis AZ Event.
