Healthy Holiday Tip: Turn things up a notch before the holidays

Sanctuary on Camelback, one of my fave resorts in the city, just started offering Zennis. Yes, like its name applies, it’s a Zen approach to tennis that merges mindful movement, yoga and tennis-specific stretches for increased balance and focus. It mentally prepares you for the game! Sanctuary’s always on the cutting edge, which is why I went to Fitness Director Kara Thomas and Tennis Director John Abelardo for their healthy holiday secrets. Here, they tell us how to avoid getting a Santa belly…

Turn things up a notch before the holidays. One pound of weight is equal to 3,500 calories. To lose weight sensibly, cut out 250 calories per day (that extra helping or dessert) and increase your cardio by 30-45 minutes per day to burn at least 250 calories. Combined you will burn about 500-600 calories per day, which is 3,500 or more calories per week… 1-2 pounds can melt away before you even begin the holiday parties! Pick your cardio program of choice (Sanctuary offers tennis, Cardio dance, hiking, biking, running, swimming and boot camps).

Practice smart party eating. If you know you’re going to a holiday party, cut out your morning and mid-day snacks. During meals, have salad and veggies first. This will help fill you the healthy way so you don’t have seconds. If you have to, just “taste” one or two tempting treats at the party. It takes 30-45 minutes of cardio to burn 250-300 calories, which is equivalent to 2 small butter cookies.

Wear a belt! Loop it around your blouse or sweater for the ladies or tuck in the shirt for men…. although this didn’t seem to stop Santa’s belly from growing. The key is not to loosen the belt up to the next notch (like Santa)!! Ho! Ho! Ho!
