5 Fitness Favorites: Lorrie Karn

Fitness instructors must be energetic and enthusiastic, bonus if they’re also encouraging, inspiring and caring. Lorrie Karn is all of those things. Group Fitness Instructor at Mountainside Fitness Carefree and Peoria locations, Lorrie teaches Tabata, Cycle, Pilates and Simply Stretch (and more!). In fact, she’s been teaching 20+ classes a week for over 20 years. “For me, the milestone really is a matter of staying fit for life,” says Lorrie. Her strongest motivation is as a wife and mother of 4, including a daughter born with special needs: “For the benefit of my daughter (and family), I have a greater responsibility to be the healthiest I can be,” says Lorrie. “So I guess you could say I’ve been running a marathon for 18 years, with many, many more to go!” Here, Lorrie shares all her fitness faves…

Favorite time to workout…
Morning is the best time to get energized and challenge myself for cardio and resistance training. That is, of course, after I’ve had a healthy breakfast and my morning cup of coffee (with a little splash of chocolate almond milk). But when it comes to unwinding and re-centering, there’s nothing like my stretch and relax class in the evenings.

Favorite calorie-burner…
What can I say: I’m a cardio queen! I absolutely love the feel and freedom of cycling, whether indoors or outside. It’s simply an amazing experience to get outdoors with friends and hit the road. A bonus of teaching (and cycling indoors) is getting the benefit of exercise while leading others and sharing their experience.

Favorite workout wear…
Like most women, I cannot live without my shoes. For cycling, I love my Shimanos. Cycling shoes really do make a difference for a more controlled and powerful ride, not to mention less stress to the anatomy of the foot. For group fitness classes, Nike works best for me. Having narrow feet, Nikes are the most accommodating while still providing support. Pilates… well, that’s just a matter of a great pedicure!

Favorite gym…
Mountainside Fitness! Having been in the fitness industry for more than 20 years, Mountainside Fitness is by far the best. There are so many classes and formats to choose from – truly anything to suit your needs (or mood). Those needing childcare can rest assured that their children are well taken care of, providing ease of mind so they can enjoy their own workout. The synergy among members is tight, and you just feel ‘at home’.

Favorite healthy restaurant…
For date night with my husband, Squid Ink Sushi Bar (across the street from the Peoria Mountainside Fitness). We enjoy sushi and sashimi along with the ‘Tahoe Roll’. My answer to healthy fast food is The Earth Bar at 67th Ave/Happy Valley. All organic and all natural smoothies, wraps and salads – I love the vegan spinach wrap with a Green Detox 1 Smoothie!
