Description

I’m Sorry But It’s Hard to Imagine May 20 – September 10, 2017

I’m Sorry But It’s Hard to Imagine experiments with the hanging of the exhibition to explore surprising connections between artworks and draw out the unexpected. The exhibition is influenced by the spirit of Fluxus, an international and interdisciplinary group of artists, composers, designers and poets that formed in the 1960s and 1970s and created radical experiments in different media and disciplines. The show is grounded in Electro-Symbio Phonics, an iconic, mixed-media sculpture by Fluxus artist Nam June Paik, which was commissioned by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture in 1992.Including works from SMoCA’s collection from the 1960s through the early 2000s, the exhibition is driven by the desire to demonstrate the mutable nature of interpretation. The pieces vary in scale, media and content. At times funny and surprising, the pairings of works address such topics as the complexities of female identity, the body as activist and the idea of what constitutes an art object.

Organized by Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
