10 Things to do in Phoenix This Weekend: Family Edition

As the busy week comes to an end and you finally get a small window of time to relax, plan a family outing on the town and enjoy the many events happening in the Valley during the weekend of Feb. 9-11. From the science geeks to the art nerds, there is something to captivate the interest of you and your youngsters.

Here are a few ideas to have a kicked back and fun weekend:


Friday:

Tween/Teen Night at Az Airtime-Scottsdale

From 8 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, all tweens and teens ages 12 and up are invited to come hang out at Az Airtime. There will be dodgeball tournaments, dancing contests, and opportunities to jump on the indoor trampolines and into foam pits. So drop your tweens/teens off and enjoy a date night, yoga class or just some quiet time as they have a supervised and super fun night! Just be sure to tell them all the cool kids are doing it.

City Lights Movie Nights: Zootopia

Every second Friday of the month, Patriots Park is dedicated to family time as families from around the Valley gather around to watch a movie. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and finishes at 9:30 p.m.. So bring a blanket or your favorite lawn chair to lounge in as you watch Zootopiaand enjoy a new experience with your family.

The Great Arizona Puppet Theater Presents “Hotel Saguaro”  

From 10 to 11 a.m., “Hotel Saguaro” will be presented at the Great Arizona Puppet Theater. Meet Sammy Saguaro, his wise grandpa and all of their friends. The event costs $7 for children and $10 for adults. Reservations are recommended.

Movies in the Desert: The Lego Movie

This Saturday, OdySea in Scottsdale continues its Movies in the Desert tradition by offering a chance to watch The Lego Movie under the stars. This event begins at 5 p.m. and there will be an hour-and-a-half dedicated to pre-movie activities. These events will include a character meet and greet, crafts, Lego Play Station, a prize wheel and giveaways.  This event is completely free and food is available for purchase at the surrounding restaurants like Johnny Rockets, Humble Pie and Frozen Penguin Ice Cream. So grab your comfiest blanket or lawn chair and enjoy a unique experience at Odysea in the Desert.

STEM Saturday- Microorganisms: The Invisible World

Attention all science geeks! Explore the microscopic world of microorganisms this Saturday as part of STEM Saturdays. You will get a chance to see just how fast bacteria multiplies and be blown away by just how small they really are. Partnering with the museum of Science and Sustainability at Tumbleweed Ranch, Chandler Museum presents this completely complementary event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday.

Concours in the Hills Roars into Fountain Hills

Calling all car lovers! This weekend, come drool over more than 600 classic and exotic cars from all eras and parts of the world. This exhibition will directly benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital and help to continue their excellent Health, Hope and Healing process. This will be taking place at the Fountain Hills Foundation Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. With special guests such as Bob Bondurant, Arie Luyendyk, Harley Cluxton and Lyn St. James, this event will be one to remember for you and your kiddos. Event admission and parking are free and the exhibitor vehicle entry fee is a minimum $60 donation. Exhibitor vehicle registration and sponsorship fees will go directly to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. (It is predicted to raise $100,000 this year.)

Admission Free Weekend: Phoenix Art Museum

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, the Phoenix Art Museum is free of charge courtesy of Discount Tire Free Family Weekend. There will be an assortment of activities for children such as educational programming, scavenger hunts, live performances, storytimes and more. So take this complimentary opportunity to bond with your kids as you learn about and make art with featured local Valley artists.

Butterfly Wonderland and the Rainforest Reptile Room

This Saturday and Sunday, take your family to the Butterfly Wonderland to enjoy a full day of getting to know many different types of animals. From butterflies to sharks to snakes, every person in your family will have a blast meeting and greeting these amazing animals. Every Saturday and Sunday aquatic feedings take place twice a day at 9:30 and 11 a.m. At this time, you and your children can enjoy the sight of seeing stingrays and sharks eat their breakfast and lunch. At 10 a.m., enjoy a face painting session and at 2 p.m., enjoy the special treat, Reptile Talks. Here you and your kiddos can talk to a specialist about the wonderful reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods and ask any question you want!

Renaissance Festival and Artisan Marketplace

Immerse your family in this entertaining yet educational experience this weekend and take a trip in time back to the 16th century when knights, castles and princesses were part of the norm. Apart from the fun atmosphere the festival brings on its own, enjoy live entertainment, food and artisan shops. The festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $26 for adults, $16 for ages 5-12 and free for ages 4 and younger.

Doll Hair Salon Spectacular at the American Girl Doll Store in the Scottsdale Quarter

Bring your little ladies to the American Girl Doll Store at the Scottsdale Quarter this Sunday from 11 a.m. to12 p.m. as they learn cute new tricks on how to style their doll’s tresses. Ladies ages 8 and up will enjoy teachings from professional stylists and receive hair accessories for their dolls. There will be a photo op and they will receive a goodie bag with a craft, hairstyling tools and an American Girl Doll Magazine.
