With a packed lineup of noteworthy exhibitions and free arts events, creativity and educational fun take center stage this weekend of August 23 to August 25.
Friday:
“Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition”
For a limited time, experience the tragedy that befell the world’s most storied ship like never before. “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition” is now open at OdySea in the Desert and features artifacts recovered from the ocean floor, a reconstruction of the ship’s interior and personal stories of passengers. Tickets cost about $20 online.
HUB at the IDEA Museum
Encourage your kids to let their imaginations run wild at HUB, an interactive space at the IDEA Museum. The exhibit provides all the tools necessary to create artwork, build, design, make music and so much more. Admission to the museum costs $9 per person.
"Mummies of the World"
Named one of the best exhibits of the summer by USA Today, “Mummies of the World” at Arizona Science Center offers an unparalleled opportunity to look into the lives of our ancient ancestors from Europe, South America and Egypt. The exhibit closes Sept. 2, so buy tickets while you still can.
Saturday:
Harlem Globetrotters
Secure seats at Talking Stick Resort Arena to experience the Harlem Globetrotters live and in action at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. This exhilarating show full of high-flying slam dunks is unlike any basketball game you’ve seen before.
Phoenix Center for the Arts Open House
Let your creative side shine with a morning of free workshops and demos, ranging from mosaic coasters to dance classes. Activities run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and are geared for all ages.
Nocturnal Myths and Legends Tour
Set out on a sunset expedition that gives you a glimpse into the tall tales and mysteries of the desert. The Nocturnal Myths and Legends Tour at the South Mountain Environmental Education Center offers a fun and informative guided walk for the entire family. All ages are welcome and registration costs $3 per person.
Face Painting at Butterfly Wonderland
Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Butterfly Wonderland, kiddos have the opportunity to bring a critter home with them in the form of face paint. Colorful painted butterflies, snakes and more are included with the price of admission.
Sunday:
Free Summer Sunday at Heard Museum
Take advantage of the final Free Summer Sunday and enjoy printmaking workshops, carving demonstrations, live music and dance performances from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Use the museum’s “Color Riot!” exhibition as inspiration for your own original pieces.
Ballet Arizona Fan Fest
Budding ballerinas will be star struck at the Ballet Arizona Fan Fest, a free event this Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the company’s studio in Phoenix. Meet the ballerinas who perform in your favorite shows, take mini ballet classes, tour the facility and more.
Sea Trek at OdySea
You don’t have to leave the desert for an immersive, under-the-sea experience. For a limited time, Sea Trek helmet diving at OdySea Aquarium is being offered at a 40 percent discount. Participants will enter one of the aquarium’s largest underwater environments and come face-to-face with marine life. Purchase tickets online.
