10 Things to do This Weekend in Phoenix: Family Edition

With one month of summer vacation nearly behind us, reenergize your summer with an interactive exhibit or a live show. This weekend of June 28 to 30 brings a wide range of cultural, historical, and artistic activities.

Symphony of the Stars Laser Show

Fans of “The Lion King,” “Jurassic Park” and “Star Wars” will be delighted by seeing a laser light show set to the tune of their favorite blockbuster film scores. At 3:30 p.m., the Arizona Science Center will be presenting a state-of-the-art laser light show on the Dorrance Planetarium dome featuring music from Broadway shows, film scores and television shows. Tickets cost $9 in addition to a general admission ticket to the museum.

“Freaky Friday” at Herberger Theater Center

Spend the night imagining life in another person’s shoes at Valley Youth Theatre’s performance of “Freaky Friday.” Adapted from the 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, the show takes a fresh spin on a classic by offering the perfect blend of comedic fun and heartfelt emotion. Tickets range from $20.50 to $39.50, and the show will play at Herberger Theater Center until June 30.

Phoenix Conservatory of Music Mini Concert Series

Hear music from various world cultures at the Civic Center branch of the Scottsdale Public Library. From 4 to 5 p.m., the Phoenix Conservatory of Music will perform a concert and audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions after each piece. See a staff person to reserve a ticket.

Support Local First Arizona’s Independents Week

Show your favorite local businesses some love this weekend by picking up a Golden Coupon at any Local First Arizona office or downloading the digital version online. Then check out the list of participating restaurants, salons, boutiques and services to decide where to score the 20 percent discount first! Local First Arizona’s Independents Week will last from June 29 to July 7 and features hundreds of participating businesses statewide.

Family Afternoon at the Phoenix Art Museum

Take advantage of your family’s extra free time this summer by nurturing your creative side at the Phoenix Art Museum. From noon to 4 p.m., the museum will be offering art-making, games and hands-on activities inspired by its collections and special exhibitions. You will also have the chance to earn prizes and explore the museum during the scavenger hunt. The event is included in the price of general admission and free for members.

Make a Mega Mess with Foam at the Children’s Museum

If your kids are already bored of the pool and sprinklers this summer vacation, take them to the Children’s Museum of Phoenix to add some suds to the mix. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the museum opens an interactive space filled with foam at no additional cost. Bring swimsuits and check out the helpful tips on the website.

Splash Pad at the Scottsdale Quarter

Family Tea at the Irish Cultural Center

Whether your family is of Irish descent or you’re just interested in learning more about the culture, enjoy tea, lemonade and treats at the Irish Cultural Center this Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $5 per seat and can be purchased online. Live entertainment will be provided by the Arizona Colleen and Rose Court.

“It’s Your Turn – Color!” at The Heard Museum

After viewing “Color Riot! How Color Changed Navajo Textiles,” head to the exhibit’s interactive, kid-friendly gallery to experiment with color and pattern. During the educational experience, participants will pick one color and follow it through all seven activities. The gallery will be open through Sept. 2 and general admission costs $18 for adults and $7.50 for children. For more information, check out the Heard Museum website.

Pioneer Living History Museum

Experience the authentic Wild West on the 90 acres of the Pioneer Living History Museum in North Phoenix. The 19th century-era town features a mix of accurately reconstructed buildings and original structures, including the cabin that survived Arizona’s bloodiest range war. The museum is open from 7 to 11 a.m. and tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for children.
