10 Things to do This Weekend in Phoenix
This weekend of July 5 to July 7, keep spirits high after Fourth of July with an art exhibit, a pool party, a sports game and so much more.
Friday:
Havana Nights at The Scott
Take a break from the blockbuster summer movies by venturing to The Scott this evening. Every Friday at dusk, the resort features a classic early-20th century film as a tribute to the glory days of black and white cinema. Sit back, relax and enjoy the film—with a signature Canal Club cocktail and some Mexican street popcorn, of course.
Postgame Fireworks Show at Chase Field
Keep the Fourth of July festivities rolling with America’s favorite pastime. Watch the Diamondbacks take on the Colorado Rockies at 6:10 p.m., but don’t head out at the seventh inning stretch this time. After the last hit, Gila River Hotels & Casinos will light up the sky with a postgame fireworks show. Tickets available here.
Party with a Purpose at Valley Bar
Give back while letting loose this Friday night at the Valley Bar. The theme of the night is Afroheat and will feature Afrobeat, soul, funk and African rhythms brought to you by DJ Vex. The bar asks for a $3 donation to benefit the Phoenix Legal Action Network (PLAN), which increases access to pro bono legal services for low-income community members.
ArtLink’s First Fridays Art Walk
Seeing all the latest and greatest art exhibits can get pricey, but on the first Friday of each month Downtown Phoenix’s art districts are free for all from 6 to 10 p.m. Tour more than 70 galleries and art spaces by foot or take advantage of the hop-on/hop-off shuttles that meet at a connector hub at the Arizona Center. Check online for a complete map and schedule.
Saturday:
Photographs by Barry M. Goldwater at Western Spirit
Most Arizonans know Barry Goldwater for his service to the state as a U.S. Senator, but the accomplished politician also had a passion for photography. Through March 27, you can view his work in the Arizona Highways Collection at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. The exhibit features the largest collection of photographs by the Senator, as well as family photos and personal items. Admission costs $15, and the museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Liquid Sunshine Pool Party at Hotel Adeline
Spend Saturday afternoon poolside at Hotel Adeline, sipping on cool cocktails in a private cabana or daybed while dancing to upbeat tunes from a live DJ. The revelry is 21-plus only and lasts from 1 to 6 p.m. No cover necessary, but reserve a cabana online.
“Mutual Reality” at SMoCA
In a world defined by technology, take a step back and consider the digital footprints you’re leaving behind. “Mutual Reality: Art on the Edge of Technology” asks viewers to do just this by interacting with a series of digital artworks. Admission to SMoCA costs $10, and the museum is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
July Object of the Month at Phoenix Art Museum
With more than 19,000 works in the permanent collection, even regulars at the Phoenix Art Museum may find it difficult to explore every nook and cranny of the sprawling space. The “Object of the Month” gallery talk makes it a little easier to find hidden treasures—each month a museum docent provides an in-depth discussion on one object in the permanent collection or on view in a special exhibition. The talk begins at 11:30 a.m. and is included in the price of general admission.
Sunday:
Trivia Night at Crescent Ballroom
A little friendly competition never hurt anybody. Grab some friends and head to the Crescent Ballroom for an evening of trivia, food and drink specials, and music from a DJ. If you’re feeling particularly knowledgeable, you may even win one of the prizes. The event begins at 6 p.m. and is free in the lounge.
FIFA Women’s World Cup Final Watch Party at Talking Stick Resort Arena
Join the Phoenix Mercury as they host a free FIFA Women’s World Cup Final watch party in support of the best teams in the world vying for victory in France. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. and kick-off is at 8 a.m. There will be appearances from the Phoenix Mercury Hip Hop Squad and Mascot Scorch as well as raffle prizes. RSVP online to join the Mercury as they #BelieveInWomen.
