Friday, Nov. 9, the Valley makes way for the 18th annual Fresh Start Charity Golf Classic at Westin Kierland Gold Club. The highly anticipated event is coordinated by the organization’s regarded Men’s Council, a group of 20-plus local men who share a passion for Fresh Start Women’s Foundation and helping the women of our community. (Fresh Start aims to empower women to transform their lives through engagement and education). In honor of the upcoming charity event—which will include auctions, live entertainment, fab fare and more—meet local Brian Campbell, active member of the Fresh Start Men’s Council.

Why did you become involved with Fresh Start’s Men’s Council?

I was looking for a nonprofit to be a part of and a friend of mine told me about Fresh Start.  I have a daughter and wanted to support an organization that someday she could either be a part of and/or reach out to if she was in need of help.  When I toured the Center it was absolutely impressive, what I saw, and I knew I had made a great choice to support an organization that was so passionate about their cause and was living what they were preaching.

How can others contribute to Fresh Start’s mission?

I encourage anyone who is interested in Fresh Start to visit the Center and experience first-hand what Fresh Start is all about.  There are so many opportunities to be a part of Fresh Start by serving on one of the boards or being part of the fundraising opportunities for one of the events that the organization puts on (Fashion Gala, Charity Golf Classic, East Valley Dinner or Fresh Start Treasures Resale Boutique).  You can also volunteer at the Center by being an instructor, a mentor, a career coach, a workshop presenter or helping out at the reception desk.

How has Fresh Start made a difference in the Valley?

Fresh Start is accommodating nearly 2,500 visits a month and sees 500 brand new women every 30 days.  The numbers are staggering and all these women are coming cities here in the Valley.

Favorite Valley restaurant: Four Peaks Brewery or Michael Dominick's Lincoln Avenue Prime Steakhouse

Favorite staycation spot: The Phoenician

Favorite thing about Arizona: I am from Illinois so walking outside at any time of the year, seeing palm trees and the mountains and realizing that I will never have to worry about shoveling snow.

Favorite escape: There are so many so I need to list a few: camping in Northern Arizona, Iowa Hawkeye football games and the occasional vacation to Kauai.

One thing you cannot live without: My wife and kids.

My perfect day would be: Not having to worry about my cell phone or e-mails.

I am inspired by: The men and women of the military that protect our great country.

I am currently working on: Generating sponsorships for the Fresh Start Charity Golf Event.
