This runway season rocked our worlds by displaying some of this year’s hottest new trends. Whether it’s a new twist on something old, a “color of the moment,” a repeated trend, or something you never dreamed would be in style-- we were able to get a taste of what is to come for spring, summer and fall. Here is a sneak peek into five of this year’s emerging trends.
Strong Shoulders
Great fashion trends always seem to repeat themselves, which is why this spring we can finally embrace our inner "Working Girl" and bring back the 1980's power suit---big shoulders and all. Yes, the strong shoulder is back again but this time we have a couple more options. So move over Melanie Griffith and check out these sophisticated, but burly shoulders.
Balmain has brought us the Wrinkle Optic Leather jacket with button-in vest detail. The slim arms and pronounced shoulders make for a fierce, lust-worthy look with a bit of an edge. The slim cut keeps you looking feminine and slender. ($6,532)
Donna Karan however, gave pronounced shoulders a different twist. Her Pre-Fall 2009 Womenswear collection exudes boxier, structured suits with slick cuts and dynamic colors. In case you didn't know; big shoulders = powerhouse.
Orange you glad it’s spring?
This rich and “fruitful” color brings a little cheer to an otherwise, dull-toned, winter wardrobe. Bright colors are huge this spring and designers such as Marc Jacobs are showcasing them left and right. Flowy, loose-fitted, bright items are a perfect match to a radiant spring day.
Lanvin gets it right here with this bold one-shouldered, silk dress. Pair it with some chic wooden platforms and a contrasting bright clutch for a night on the town. ($2,010)
Need a stylish cover up for the pool? Diane von Furstenburg presents us with this boho-chic cover up in a bright, Vitamin C tone. Don’t be afraid to be versatile with it, a cover-up can double as a sundress. Strap on a pair of studded sandals and grab a slouchy tote for a day out. ($250)
Wood you dare?
As Marilyn Monroe said, I don't know who invented the high heel, but all men owe him a lot. Well, whoever invented the wooden platform is in dire need of some credit too! The options for wooden platforms are endless this spring. Sky-high, wedge, strappy or sling-back, there is a pair for everyone (and they are very comfortable too!)
Try these luxurious, stamped leather sling-back Miu Miu sandals. The sky-high heel (6 inches!) fabulously compliments your legs and gives you serious supermodel height. ($445)
Where do I even begin with these Bottega Veneta crocodile wedges? Although not necessarily wood, these super-size stacked heels need to be included. They look great with a flowy printed dress or even paired with the must-have “boyfriend” denim cut-offs. ($1,650)
The delicious, chocolate-brown shade of these Marni leather platforms oozes style for spring. Try a bohemian look by pairing these beauties with a printed maxi dress and some round shades. ($735)
Bibs to be proud of
The word “bib” typically has an infantile ring to it but bib necklaces added some serious glamour to this season’s runway shows. Some are seriously gaudy with bright jewels and pendants while others are a dainty addition to a plain blouse.
J Crew showed off a fantastic floral design with orange and pink tones. Perfect to lay delicately over the neckline, this bib adds flair to any top. ($175)
I fell especially in love with this Lee Angel Ombré bib necklace. The chunky beads and varying green tones spice up any outfit, while the subtle gold clasps add luxurious detail. Trying pairing it with a sheer, white blouse. ($500)
Embrace your mind, body and soul with this natural-chic Tory Burch Crystal Resin bib necklace. A leather cord clasps around the neck adding an edgier feel to this ultra-feminine necklace. The multicolored stones also allow for endless outfit pairings. ($350)
Round About
I know what you’re thinking, “hello, John Lennon,” but round sunnies have been popping up on the runways and celebrities. They are surprisingly very flattering to the face and come in all sorts of bright, fun colors. So move over big, bug-eye shades and give some room for this hot, upcoming trend.
Ralph Lauren oversized shades are a perfect transition into round frames. They are subtle but utterly glamorous. Even the link chain gives them a sophisticated, retro look to die for. I especially like how the frame is clear around the edges but black in the front. ($240)
The tinted lenses on these fabulous Marni shades are reserved for the risk takers. However, the square angle on the sides of the frame gives these sunnies a bit of a futuristic look. Try pulling your hair back and letting these shades naturally compliment your face. ($350)
Chanel tends to stay true to their signature, quilted look. But that’s why we love them, right? These small, round acetate frames with lambskin-covered arms are the epitome of glamour. I don’t think we would ever spot Dwayne Wayne or John Lennon accessorizing with these beauties. ($340)
Try dipping your toes into some of these looks and you will be a fabulous trendsetter in no time. It never hurts to take a fashion risk because you might just be showcasing the hottest new look before anyone. Look at Carrie Bradshaw; if she didn’t take a risk and adorn herself with birds and huge flowers, she would never be the style icon that she is.
