Now\u00a0& Then Creative Company, a new, non-profit theatre and film organization is\u00a0kicking off its inaugural season with a contemporary interpretation of the\u00a0Greek tragedy, Medea<\/em>. The play will run from November 10-19 at the Metropolitan Arts Institute.\u00a0Written\u00a0by Euripides in 431 B.C., Medea<\/em>\u00a0is one of the most\u00a0popular and gripping classics for modern audiences. Originally set in ancient\u00a0Greece sometime after Jason\u2019s famous journey with the Argonauts, Now & Then\u00a0provides an updated concept and point of view for the\u00a0production.
John Perovich and Allison Bauer founded\u00a0Now & Then Creative Company in February 2017. Under the leadership of\u00a0Artistic Director Perovich and Associate Artistic Director Cody Goulder, Now\u00a0& Then focuses on the “now” – new play development and film\u00a0production, while also\u00a0producing the “then” – classic pieces that\u00a0speak to the present. In residence at Metropolitan Arts Institute, the company\u00a0creates high quality, thoughtful, and affordable productions that value\u00a0artistic risks.

In Now & Then\u2019s premier production,\u00a0they present an updated\u00a0concept and point of view for Medea<\/em>. Director\u00a0Gerald Thomson has set the play in the mid-90s outside of Martha\u2019s Vineyard.\u00a0The storyline focuses on Medea, a distraught, dishonored, American\u00a0political-class mother at\u00a0odds with her unfaithful husband and those\u00a0surrounding him. Focused on self-preservation, Medea attempts to leverage her\u00a0place in society to protect herself and her children from judgment. Accompanied\u00a0by a female chorus of working professionals, the production consistently\u00a0juxtaposes Medea – a wealthy woman who feels like she has no options – with\u00a0level headed, firm voices of reason. Thomson\u2019s production challenges the\u00a0audience to question free will and the supposed inevitability of Medea\u2019s path.\u00a0
Medea<\/em>\u00a0will be presented\u00a0November 10-11 and November 17-18 at 7:30 p.m. and November 12 and 19 at 2 p.m.\u00a0The\u00a0play is intimately staged as theatre-in-the-round at Metropolitan Arts\u00a0Institute.
