Las Vegas performer and local legend Marley Taylor is back in the Valley with a new weekly gig at Blue Martini Lounge<\/a> starting on Wednesday, September 11, part of the bar\u2019s Girls Night Out event.<\/p>\n

The former Zowie Bowie member is back with The Marley Taylor Band, a trio made-up of bassist (and Taylor\u2019s husband) Chris de Herrera, and singer and keyboardist Dan Lovelock<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Taylor\u2019s experiences since her days at Barcelona have been plentiful. In the early millennium her blonde hair, big voice and personality became a staple of the Scottsdale nightlife scene. With almost a decade spent under the Las Vegas spotlight, Marley is humbled and happy to be home back to her roots, with a husband, a new band, and most noticeably, with a new hair color.<\/p>\n

Arizona Foothills spoke with Taylor about her love affair with music, her career as a successful performer and the long road home.<\/p>\n

AFM: When did you start performing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Oh my gosh, since I can remember. I mean definitely from the age 12 professionally. I grew up in Houston and as soon as my dad knew I could sing, he was like, \u201clet\u2019s get you out there, let\u2019s get you out with some bands.\u201d I don\u2019t think I was even of-age to be in the club, as long as my dad was with me it was OK. So I started performing right away.<\/p>\n

AFM: When did you fall in love with it and decide that you wanted to do it for a career?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Ever since I started to listen to music. Even as a kid I can remember just being fascinated with the radio. I wanted to write songs, so ever since I experienced music. It was always something I was so drawn to, and I knew it the minute that I heard it on the radio.<\/p>\n

AFM: What was your first regular gig?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> I think I was just playing in a duo in Houston in some different bars and stuff like that. My idol at the time was Olivia Newton John \u00a0\u2014\u00a0she\u2019s like my favorite singer. So I remember for my first gig, she was the only singer who I really knew all of the songs to, so we just sat there in the bar with my Olivia Newton John song book and sang all of her songs to about five people in the bar (laughs).<\/p>\n

AFM: That\u2019s fun, are you a big Grease fan?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Oh yea, anything she\u2019s done I love.<\/p>\n

AFM: So a lot of natives know you from Barcelona, how did that gig start?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> So basically I met Chris Phillips, who is Zowie Bowie, and we were like: we want to put a high-energy dance club show together for Vegas. But we were living here in the Valley. So we were like \u201chow can we do that?\u201d Barcelona is the hottest nightclub and they were opening the Scottsdale location, because they had two locations, and so we did sort of an audition for them. They were like \u201calright, let\u2019s see how it goes,\u201d and the first night we were there it was like, standing ovation, and encore, and it went over so well that Dani came over to us and was like \u201cOK, how about every Thursday, Friday, Saturday?\u201d And we were like \u201cYea!\u201d<\/p>\n

I mean, we were pretty much flat broke, and just sort of crossing our fingers and just hoping for something to come along to sort of put us in the position to go to Vegas and do all of the things we wanted to do, and Barcelona was the perfect opportunity. It just launched us into everything we wanted to do.<\/p>\n

AFM: What are some of the highlights of your time spent there?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> So many, I mean of course being on stage, especially in season. I mean the lines wrapped around the building and the energy in there was so intense and fun, with the Phoenix Open and all the events, Barrett Jackson, and all of that coming through town. It was just such a classy place to go. It was just jam packed. People from all over the country coming in, meeting people every night from all over the world. To have people coming back year after year and saying \u201chey, this is the highlight trip, is coming to see you guys perform at Barcelona,\u201d it was amazing. Plus, having celebrities on stage with us, and really getting to enjoy all that the season has to offer. When Scottsdale is in season it\u2019s just slammin\u2019. It was great.<\/p>\n

AFM: What kind of celebrities went on stage with you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Well my favorite was Paula Abdul, at the time American Idol was super hot and she would come up there and just \u2014\u00a0I remember one night, I forget what she was doing, but she was drinking and she pretended to make out with both of us on stage. She\u2019s wild and fun and I always liked that about her.<\/p>\n

AFM: So how did you guys get to Vegas?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Well a family that owns casinos in Las Vegas, had been supporting us for a while, and then they said \u201chey, we have this new property opening called Red Rocks<\/a>, it\u2019s going to be five-star, it\u2019s going to be one our premium properties, and we\u2019d love to have you guys come out.\u201d So one of their cousins came into Barcelona and said \u201chey, I\u2019m going to get you out to Vegas with my cousins.\u201d We went up there and got a tour of the place to check it out, and they gave us an offer, and it was good offer but we weren\u2019t sure if it\u2019s what we wanted yet. It wasn\u2019t enough, it wasn\u2019t exactly what we wanted. And then they said, well, whatever you guys want, just write it down and you got it. We were just like \u201coh my gosh, we can\u2019t even refuse,\u201d \u00a0it was amazing. So all of us moved up there and we opened up Red Rocks and launched the whole new hotel, which was an amazing experience.<\/p>\n

AFM: What was it like transitioning from the Scottsdale crowd to Vegas?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Well the Vegas crowds have seen everything, so they\u2019re a little bit more judgmental, a little bit harder to please and so we were like \u201coh gosh, how are we going to do this again in a whole new area and start from scratch?\u201d Basically you\u2019re making one fan a night. You try to go out into the audience, see who\u2019s there and meet them. You become friends with your fans because they come back night after night, it\u2019s kind of a family energy. Everyone gets to know each other and it\u2019s fun. It\u2019s a bit scary at first, but ya know, Las Vegas really embraced us, me, and took us in. We had a bunch of media on billboards to kind of welcome us to the community and it just seemed to fall into place right away.<\/p>\n

AFM: What did you miss about Scottsdale when you were there?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Well, I think Las Vegas is different. If you want to be a performer there it\u2019s definitely the ultimate place to be as far as live shows. But for me I didn\u2019t really want to leave Scottsdale. It\u2019s so livable, it\u2019s so cozy and it\u2019s so beautiful and quiet, and has a nice energy here that I really like. So, I gave Vegas five years tops, before I went back to Scottsdale. It\u2019s just home to me. My family is here, and there\u2019s just something in the air here that doesn\u2019t exist in Vegas. It\u2019s just has that wilder, 24\/7 vibe to it that was just driving me crazy. I\u2019m thankful for my career, it\u2019s going great, but I want to get back to what I really love and what\u2019s important. At least when I\u2019m done I can say I\u2019ve headlined all over Las Vegas \u2014\u00a0we did Monte Carlo the Palms \u2014\u00a0I mean we did it all. I\u2019m thankful for the opportunity but I\u2019m definitely glad to back, sort of on the planet earth. I was there for almost eight years and was definitely past my expiration date. For me it was overdue but I\u2019m glad I got to stay. I met my husband there in the last year and a half, so if it wasn\u2019t for that opportunity I wouldn\u2019t have met my husband.<\/p>\n

AFM: Congrats with that.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Well thank you!<\/p>\n

AFM: So is that why you decided to end things with Zowie Bowie? You were just over it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Yea, and I really feel like it\u2019s important musically to just keep things fresh, exciting and new. Once you\u2019ve done something for 11 years, and like I said, we had a great run, it was just time to move on and find what else is out there and spread my wings a bit, and change things up a bit. I think that\u2019s so important, to keep things new and fresh, for me it was time to branch out.<\/p>\n

AFM: Right, so how does it feel now, being back \u00a0home in the Valley.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> It feels amazing. I mean I can\u2019t even tell you, we were commuting back and forth for a while from Vegas. It was unsettling every week to have to go back to Vegas to do the show and then come back here. So once we settled in full-time it just felt right. It was very peaceful, happy and exciting. I just felt like there was so much opportunity here in the Valley musically to keep my busy, it\u2019s wonderful.<\/p>\n

AFM: So now you\u2019re going to be playing at Blue Martini on Wednesdays, what can people expect from your show there? How would you compare it to Barcelona?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s definitely similar in the sense that it\u2019s a nightclub, high-energy show with modern and current dance music. We try to stay current with the top hits, then we do a few throwbacks and old-school hits \u2014\u00a0just to mix it up a bit. It\u2019s definitely high-energy like Barcelona, it\u2019s just a great venue for people to come out and dance, have a good time and hear music that\u2019s super current, engage with a band and be part of a whole experience. We have people come on stage and dance with us, it\u2019s just a party.<\/p>\n

AFM: What can older fans expect that might be coming back for the first time to see you again?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marley:<\/strong> Well I think they get a sense of reminiscing about the times at Barcelona, a lot of them I\u2019ve seen so far have been like \u201coh my gosh, you\u2019re bringing this back!\u201d They get these old memories and that little sparkle in their eyes of the days at Barcelona and how it used to be. What\u2019s different for me now is, I\u2019ve gone through the whole Vegas experience so I have much more experience on stage, and with crowds and audiences \u2014\u00a0but I\u2019m brunette, I look different. I\u2019ve got a whole different image. People go \u201coh my gosh you\u2019ve totally reinvented yourself,\u201d So ya know, the transition for me has been good. I\u2019ve been able to sort of lose that stagey, Vegas look with the bleach blonde hair and the tan and all of that. It\u2019s great and everything, but I\u2019ve gotten much back to my roots here. My really hair color, just being myself, not having to be playing a role of any sort. For me, that\u2019s awesome.<\/p>\n
