Art is everywhere. At least it seems that way in Phoenix these days. The break-out of public art installations and downtown wall murals is a genuine attempt on the parts of local businesses and entertainment venues to make their wall-spaces more appealing. We’ve gathered a list of the best spots in Phoenix to catch revolving and permanent visual art collections while you enjoy a fresh brew\u00a0\u2014 coffee or beer that is.<\/p>\n

Lux<\/h2>\n

\"lux\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The go-to spot for coffee, a light breakfast, free wifi and work space in Central Phoenix, Lux Coffee, also boasts a most attractive visual feature: good aesthetics. You can\u2019t find another coffee shop (and bar!) quite like Lux in the Valley. Part of it has to do with the layout. You have to know how to get into the place\u2014the front door is not situated street-side, as you might expect most diners or strip mall businesses. Go around to the back (or, the West-side, to be specific) and enter. First you encounter a few short rows of couches and cafeteria-style seating. Then you approach the coffee bar, hygienically protected behind glass, but displaying an appealing collection of fresh baked goods\u2014vegan and normal\u2014as well as printed menus and a coffee list. Go a little deeper in, and you hit the central room (feels like a living room from your best friend\u2019s house from middle school, if your best friends\u2019 parents were yuppies with good taste) and the wine and beer bar. Even deeper and you get the room with the big tellie. And all the way back, you get a littler, typically quieter room, with some nice big tables and available chairs to sprawl-out in. But what a lot of patrons appreciate about this place most is the art. Check out the woodsy coffee tables and cold steel deco, plus some heavily layered paintings and pop art-inspired visuals on the walls.<\/p>\n

Always open at 6 a.m. this coffee shop also does meals, happy hour, and then becomes a bar at night. Most weekdays, Lux is open until midnight; Fridays and Saturdays \u2019til 2 a.m.<\/p>\n

Gypsy Bar<\/h2>\n

Opposite the Lucky Strike bowling alley, but at the same address, and tucked beyond the arcade games, visitors to CitySpace will find a very grown-up event and show space, accented by a revolving selection of paintings, and oftentimes, live \u201cart performers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI invite artists to paint live while on stage every Saturday night,\u201d says curator, Jen Deveroux. Deveroux has taken over the creative direction as well as events planning for Gypsy Bar for about the past 10 months. In addition to painters who produce works live onstage during events, Deveroux also selects featured artists to have a stay on the interior walls for a month or two. Currently on display at Gypsy Bar are wild, blaring paintings by the eclectic downtown Phoenix artist, Aztec Smurf. Look for more to come, she says, in the fall and winter seasons.<\/p>\n

SideBar<\/h2>\n

Hidden like a speakeasy in a nondescript commercial development at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Central is SideBar, a popular landing spot for the late-night and weekend crowds. SideBar is mainly known for its lengthy collection of custom cocktails\u2014drinks ranging from the White Rabbit, a rich, soulful martini that tastes a little like a marshmallow; to the \u2019Lectric Lemonade, a mash-up of citron vodka, cointreau, limoncello, fresh lemon juice and sweet and sour; and 7Cup\u2014a caucasion with root beer vodka, kahlua and cream. But this quirky upstairs hidden gem should also be recognized for the amazing collections of visual art pinned to its geometric, spacy wall-papered walls. Currently on display is a group of fairly minimal, clean line-drawing art of local artist Abe Z. Other art that has been featured includes wild, loud Mexicano prints and paintings, elegant feminine painted works, art-photographic prints and more. Check out this cozy classic cocktail bar for its diverse selection of excellent shaken drinks, as well as ever-changing eye candy.<\/p>\n

Lost Leaf<\/h2>\n

Sometimes considered a Roosevelt Row dive with the best collection of bottled imports and specialty beers in the fridge, Lost Leaf should also be recognized for its interesting lineups of live local music, and the one-of-a-kind paintings, sculpture, drawing and more that adorn its wooden walls. The bar opens only after 5 p.m. so guests may have to squint to check out the rotating collections on the wall. But squint away\u2014it\u2019s worth it. Curated by local visual artist Tato Caraveo, there is always something interesting up at Lost Leaf. From paintings of monkeys up to various shenanigans, to intriguing metal works mixed with wood, this bar shows art of many varieties. Through the month of September, Lost Leaf features the art of Bridt Ellyse and in October will display dark drawings and prints by Phil McCarty. \u201cEvery first Friday we open up our beer garden and host the artist reception on Third Fridays,\u201d says organizer Tato Caraveo. Downtown artwalk patrons and neighbors can visit Lost Leaf at<\/p>\n

SquidInk Sushi<\/h2>\n

An exciting and unexpected new edition to the downtown art-gazing lineup is SquidInk Sushi, located near Chase Field and right across the street from CityScape. SquidInk started on the Northside, up at Happy Valley Road, but the demand and popularity quickly suggested that a downtown Phoenix location might be in the works. The new location, conveniently situated near lightrail, has a comfortable outdoor bar, misters and big-screen televisions. But masterfully crafted into the interior seating areas are plenty of wall space for paintings and other visuals. In Japanese culture, sushi in itself is an art\u2014a culmination of expert raw fish, beds of sweet rice and delectable dry seaweed, finely arranged, rolled and sliced by well-trained craftsman. At SquidInk, there is a rounded sushi bar where patrons can sit, and observe the resident \u201cartists\u201d at work. Manager of Marketing Abby Queal says that SquidInk plans to cycle through plenty of local artists in the coming months. \u201cEvery month we feature a new artist,\u201d Queal says. \u201cThis month’s show is a collaboration between Jesse Perry and Carlos Rivas.\u201d The art on the walls right now is, appropriately images of aquatic life and Japanesethemed paintings. One of their main attractions is a collection of eye-catching mural work by Justin Queal, another local artist who is set to have an opening party at SquidInk in the coming months.<\/p>\n
