Heavy rock legend Black Sabbath performed in Phoenix on Friday, August 30 at US Airways to a sold out crowd. Original members Tony Ionni (guitar), Josep “Geezer” Butler (bass) and of course, the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, were all present.<\/p>\n

Original drummer Bill Ward was not part of the show. Controversy surrounded the announcement that Ward would not be part of the reunion tour earlier this month, after Ozzy was quoted saying<\/a>: “A drummer has to be in shape. He\u2019s already had two heart attacks. I don\u2019t want to be responsible for his life.”<\/p>\n

Ward’s replacement is noticeably younger than the rest of the band members, but was able to keep-up with veteran rockers Ionni and Butler.\u00a0Musically the band still rocks. Ionni and Butler effortlessly shredded through each song and hypnotized the audience with mind-blowing bass and guitar solos.<\/p>\n

Although Black Sabbath lyrics are dark with frequent references to Satan, Ozzy noticeably has a special admiration for his fans. He looks out into the crowd with an excited, warm smile, almost like a parent to his grown child. \u00a0It’s apparent when Ozzy performs that this is what he loves. He’s comfortable, maybe at times a little too comfortable, but he’s at home.<\/p>\n

He opened the performance hard, bringing a bucket of water out on stage and dumping it onto a media-photographer, then pouring the remainder of the water on himself. The crowd loved it, Ozzy loved it\u00a0\u2014 it’s better than bats.<\/p>\n

Throughout the performance Ozzy would open his arms wide as if absorbing the energy from the crowd. \u00a0He engages the fans by shouting one of the classic crowd winder-uppers:\u00a0“You’re beautiful,” “I can’t hear you,” and “on the count of three, I want to hear you fucking scream!”<\/p>\n

The fans were a riot.\u00a0\u00a0A thick, herbal smell \u2014\u00a0that would have drove a drug dog wild \u2014\u00a0lingered through the packed crowd dressed in varieties of Black Sabbath memorabilia from different time periods. \u00a0Fans were nearly pouring out of their seats, chanting along to each song, shredding air guitars and punching their fists in the air.<\/p>\n

Apart from sound issues and vocal pitch and annunciation quality, the performance was everything reminiscent of the rock era that Sabbath dominated. Regardless of age, Ozzy is still the leader of a distinct and thriving subculture.<\/p>\n
