Programmer, composer and dad, Brian Transeau a.k.a BT has been an influential force in the music industry for over 15 years. \u00a0He\u2019s toured the globe, created music production software and scored music for movies and TV.<\/p>\n

BT\u00a0performs at El Santo Cantina tonight. AFM spoke with the music producer earlier this week about his upcoming album, A Song Across Wires<\/em>, his work with a new ABC television show and his favorite sounds.<\/p>\n

AFM \u2013 So you play in Scottsdale this Saturday, what can fans expect\u00a0from your set? Will it be all new music or some of your older sounds\u00a0too?<\/strong><\/p>\n

BT \u2013<\/strong> It\u2019ll be a mixture of both. I play lots of mashups and live remixes of my music. It\u2019s\u00a0super high energy and if you know my music, you\u2019ll know every song.<\/p>\n

AFM \u2013 How do you differentiate the music you play from venue to\u00a0venue, city to city?<\/strong><\/p>\n

BT \u2013<\/strong> Interestingly I like to test the waters with what \u201cera\u201d of music people of mine in\u00a0any given venue know well. The end goal is to have everyone in the audience\u00a0sing every single word hands in the air! It depends on the crowd whether they are\u00a0going for things like \u201cMust Be The Love\u201d or \u201cDreaming.\u201d Often at festivals both will\u00a0work. It\u2019s incredible having a 20-year catalogue to draw from. Last year at EDC\u00a0Vegas I was playing 40,000 people songs that were out before they were born\u00a0and they were singing every word. That\u2019s an awesome feeling.<\/p>\n

AFM \u2013 When was the last time you were in Arizona? Are there any\u00a0sites, restaurants or local spots you like to grab food or a drink at\u00a0when you\u2019re in town?<\/strong><\/p>\n

BT \u2013<\/strong> It\u2019s been a couple years. The thing I want to see there is the massive telescope in\u00a0the desert. I hope I have time.<\/p>\n

AFM \u2013 Congrats on your new album, A Song Across Wires<\/em>. The title\u00a0seems to sort of illustrate the way sound translates from a computer\u00a0screen to sound waves. How did you come up with that title?<\/strong><\/p>\n

BT \u2013<\/strong> It\u2019s a modified version of a line from a poem I love. The authors are South African\u00a0and their project is called I Wrote this for You. It\u2019s incredibly moving work and\u00a0when reading this poem I was like \u201cthat is it\u201d.<\/p>\n

AFM \u2013 I know you\u2019re really into the technology and science of music\u00a0production. For this particular album, are there certain emotions or\u00a0experiences that made you want to create the specific sounds?\u00a0How do you balance the art and science of creating music?<\/strong><\/p>\n

BT \u2013<\/strong> Making music with staying power and depth is my ultimate end goal. I write from\u00a0a very emotional place and the melody, song, lyrics, meaning, feeling. Those are\u00a0the things that count in my estimation. The lab coat stuff is academically exciting\u00a0for me but it must aid the overall composition or there isn\u2019t a point imho. So first\u00a0comes the song and composition, the technical stuff is secondary.<\/p>\n

AFM \u2013 There are a lot of collaborations on this album. What was one\u00a0collaboration on this album that you were extremely excited about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

BT \u2013<\/strong> My favorite two songs on the album are \u201cLifeline\u201d and \u201cLetting Go.\u201d \u201cLifeline\u201d is\u00a0sung by a new singer named Senadee. He is unreal, his voice and the searing\u00a0melody I expect to be sung back to me over and over by festival crowds. It\u2019s my\u00a0favorite, uplifting, sing-along I think I\u2019ve ever done. \u201cLetting Go\u201d features JES\u2019 amazing\u00a0vocal and newcomers Au5 and Fractal. They are 2 guys I\u2019ve mentored for the\u00a0last couple years and I love what they do. They\u2019re going to be huge. I\u2019m excited\u00a0for people to hear this song because it\u2019s a blend of Trance and Dubstep. It\u2019s right\u00a0on the line.<\/p>\n

AFM \u2013 You\u2019ve scored a lot of music for movies over the years. What\u00a0are some your stand out experiences?<\/strong><\/p>\n

BT \u2013<\/strong> Fast and Furious is definitely a favorite. When we did it the studio didn\u2019t pay\u00a0attention to us at all until it came out. They were blown away people were\u00a0that interested in modded cars (true story). Another favorite is working for\u00a0Pixar. They are an incredible company and we have a similar workflow. When\u00a0they can\u2019t do something they design a tool to achieve their creative end goal.\u00a0That is the exact reason I started Sonik Architects (my software company\u00a0now acquired by iZotope). I think of compositions that can\u2019t be done\u00a0with commercially available software, so I have to build something to finish my\u00a0work.<\/p>\n

AFM \u2013 I\u2019ve heard you\u2019re going to be part of a new TV show on ABC.\u00a0What is the show about? What\u2019s your role?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

BT \u2013<\/strong> I\u2019m writing all the music. It\u2019s 13 episodes and the network is really excited about\u00a0this show, as am I. I scored the pilot and it was a blast to do. I worked with Patty\u00a0Jenkins who directed Monster (that I scored). She is wonderful to work with. She\u00a0is very music focused and pushes me hard, often into new territories. The show\u2019s score is mostly orchestral and atmospheric with a good handful of massive Taiko\u00a0suspense cues. It\u2019s a blast to work on and already has a very robust musical\u00a0signature. I\u2019m very excited to dig in this fall.<\/p>\n

AFM- What kind of music do you\u00a0listen to when you want to unwind and be Brian vs. BT?<\/strong><\/p>\n

BT \u2013<\/strong> My daughter\u2019s voice and the crickets in the garden. Those are my two favorite\u00a0sounds.<\/p>\n
