Maya Day and Nightclub has quickly made a splash in Scottsdale\u2019s nightlife\u00a0scene as the new go-to spot for epic pool parties that feature a string of DJ\u2019s with beats that\u00a0bring down the house. The club made a refreshing change of pace Thursday, June 6, by hosting a night of Yoga and\u00a0musical performances that benefited \u2018A Life Story Foundation,\u2019 helping find a cure\u00a0for\u00a0Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).<\/p>\n

\"yogause_one\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Hundreds of yogis lined up their mats around Maya\u2019s pool, creating a serene oasis of\u00a0tranquility \u2013 with cocktails, of course. The evening opened with Anton Mackey and\u00a0Desiree Lapre as they lead an hour-long yoga practice to the sounds of DJ H3LLA.\u00a0Cali-native and local favorite, Kelley James, took the stage shortly after. The singer rapper-guitarist, who has become best known for his freestyle raps on topics of the\u00a0audience\u2019s choice (in this case yoga\u00a0and beer) put on his usual stellar\u00a0show that brought the audience off their mats and to their feet.\u00a0The typical bearded, reggae, beat-boxer, Matisyahu, came on stage clean-shaven,\u00a0looking like he just stepped off the set of a GQ shoot and gave an intimate, soul shaking acoustic performance that completed the night.\u00a0If you\u2019re wondering how yoga, cocktails, and music mesh together, look to the earto-ear grins that remain plastered on the attendees\u2019 faces days after. That\u2019s enough\u00a0to rave success and all for a good cause.<\/p>\n

We caught up with Kelley James after his set to talk music, life, and yoga. Here\u2019s\u00a0what he had to say.<\/p>\n

\"kelleyuse\"<\/a><\/p>\n

AFM: You\u2019re from Cali, what brought you to Phoenix?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:<\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019ve be here four years playing at the W hotel, they brought me in when I was in college\u00a0and I started touring and playing for all these fraternities and sororities and this was\u00a0my first regular thing where I could just route through Phoenix once a month. We\u00a0got to play some of our most fun shows but the important part is I got to work on so\u00a0much my live show over at the W. So it was this cool training ground where I could\u00a0do back to back nights, two different sets and just work on my live show.<\/p>\n

AFM: How does it feel to be the first live concert performer at Maya?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong>Maya is obviously the same people as at the W, so it\u2019s great. I\u2019ve always been treated\u00a0so well here.<\/p>\n

AFM: When did you realize that you could rap?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong>I grew up in Northern California, so hip-hop was always on the radio. As kids, we\u00a0didn\u2019t think of it as this new music, per say. We thought everybody listened to it.\u00a0Looking back on it, it hadn\u2019t really hit the Midwest yet and definitely not the south. So early 90s we were listening to hip hop music and the Bay area had this crazy\u00a0scene with the syncopation of the words and everything is something that I always\u00a0listened to but I also played guitar. So I\u2019d have a Snoop Dog CD in then I\u2019d put on\u00a0Dave Matthews and that is what I thought was normal. Nirvana & NWA. So when\u00a0I was in high school, I just started making up songs while playing guitar, you know,\u00a0when I\u2019d see a hot girl… Or when I was at a party, I\u2019d play for all my boys.<\/p>\n

AFM: Does that work on the ladies?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong>Only once.<\/p>\n

AFM:\u00a0What did you sing her?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong>Something like, \u201coh baby baby, oh\u201d by Justin Bieber.<\/p>\n

AFM: So you were the hit of most parties?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong>The sad reality of it is I\u2019m the one playing like this love song and all my boys are with\u00a0the girls that when I\u2019m finished playing, it\u2019s like\u2026. What! I get no love. It happened\u00a0so much.<\/p>\n

AFM: Speaking of love\u2026?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u2019m married. I finally got love!<\/p>\n

AFM: Congratulations!\u00a0Do you remember your lyrics after a freestyle or\u2026 do you just blackout?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong>Absolutely. My mind is going so fast that literally as soon as you say it, you push it\u00a0out and it\u2019s on to the next thing.\u00a0People always make fun of me, like the Old School thing with Will Farrell, when\u00a0he answers in the debate. All of a sudden he has this brilliant answer then, \u201cwhat\u00a0happened, I blacked out.\u201d\u00a0So \u00a0for the most part, it is like a blackout situation.<\/p>\n

AFM: Pertaining to Yoga, do you practice?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley: <\/strong>When I\u2019m home, in like my space of perfection: Wake up, surf in the morning, write\u00a0music, eat vegan all day, do yoga and watch a movie at night. Like that is my end\u00a0game. That will be my life at some point. So if I could do Yoga everyday, I would. It\u00a0would be my only workout.<\/p>\n

AFM: What\u2019s your favorite pose?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong>I like the hip opens a lot. They are just crazy. My buddy just opened a hot yoga\u00a0studio in Hermosa and so I like Hot Yoga. I\u2019ll put any fitness person up to a hot yoga\u00a0session with a real instructor that will push you. I don\u2019t know if anything is harder\u00a0than that.<\/p>\n

AFM: So let me put you on the spot. If you could make up your own yoga pose, what\u00a0would you call it and can you demonstrate it for me?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong>It would be the air guitar. Wait, no\u2026 actually \u2018The Slash.\u2019 Remember how Slash\u00a0used to do his guitar solos?<\/p>\n

AFM: I don\u2019t\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong>Well when you get back, you need to YouTube 1991 Guns and Roses and it would be\u00a0like this (put his guitar in the air) and then go into tree pose.<\/p>\n

\u00a0AFM:\u00a0Last, can I get a free style about how the event went tonight?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelley:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Back in a random room what\u2019s this hallway?<\/p>\n

Now they put me on the spot, what am I gunna say?<\/p>\n

Free style about yoga, its not really cool,<\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m going to say some dumb stuff act like a fool.<\/p>\n

Plus I have to keep it PG,<\/p>\n
