\u201cLove. It\u2019s what\nmakes a Subaru, a Subaru.\u201d It\u2019s hard to argue with the popular automaker\u2019s latest\nadvertising slogan. Hard, also, for my 13-year-old not to repeat it every time\nwe went somewhere in the new Ascent, Subaru\u2019s first three-row vehicle and the\nbiggest vehicle it\u2019s ever built. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, people love\ntheir Subarus; they are second only to Toyota in terms of owner loyalty, according\nto Edmunds 2018 Loyalty Report, leaping from 45 to 61 percent over the course\nof a decade. This is due, in no small part, to the explosion in popularity of\nthe SUV market, where Subaru excels. Again according to Edmunds, in 2017, 75\npercent of SUV owners who traded in their SUVs did so for another SUV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Award-winning style and capability<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ascent joins Subaru\u2019s stellar line-up of all-wheel drive SUVs and crossovers that includes the compact Crosstrek, midsized Forester, and Outback wagon models. Basically, for the Ascent, Subaru took everything that it\u2019s good at \u2013 sporty all-wheel drive, spacious, comfortable interiors, rugged exterior appearance \u2013 and expanded it into a bigger, family-sized package with flexible storage and seating options, and a variety of tech and safety systems. All of that earned the new Ascent a Consumer Reports “Top Pick” <\/a>award in the mid-sized SUV category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I first drove the\nnew Subaru Ascent at the Southwest Lifestyle Media Drive in Chandler, Arizona,\nthis past October, where it took top honors as SUV\/Crossover of the Year \u2013 Best\nValue. At that time, I was impressed with its looks and road manners, as well\nas an extensive list of standard features that includes four USB ports (up to\neight are available, depending on trim and option packages), 19 bottle and cup\nholders, three-zone climate control, a 6.5-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay and\nAndroid Auto. Most buyers will likely opt up to the Premium trim, which I had\nfor a weeklong test drive, which adds spill-repellent cloth upholstery, 8-inch\ntouchscreen, Wi-Fi hotspot, rear-seat climate controls, heated seats and more\nniceties. Premium and above trims offer a second-row captain\u2019s chair option, for\nseven vs. eight-passenger seating, but easier access to the third row. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every day and everywhere<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

So after my\ninitial drive of the Ascent, I had the opportunity to live with it for a week. That\u2019s\nwhen the \u201clove\u201d factor touted in the ads kicked in. The Ascent fit seamlessly into\nmy busy life. Need to get a kid to soccer practice? Check. Have to get an\nelectronic keyboard and stand, along with a few kids, to a choir concert across\ntown? Check! Trip to Costco? Done. Ikea? No problem. And while I didn\u2019t take it\non a road trip this time around, Ascent is the ideal family vehicle for a long\ndrive. The ride is comfortable, it\u2019s packed with enough amenities to mitigate \u201cAre\nwe there yet?\u201d queries and bickering over whose device to plug in, and it was\nnamed an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick +, its highest\nrating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power from the all-new\n260-horsepower BOXER engine is superb, and it is paired with a CVT featuring eight-speed\nmanual mode. With all-wheel drive and Subaru X-Mode, standard on all trim levels,\nAscent is a true go-anywhere vehicle, with the capacity to tow up to 5,000\npounds, the most of any Subaru, ever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s so much to\nlike about the new Ascent. Not least of which is that it can haul up to eight\npassengers comfortably, nearly anywhere, and is equipped with the most desirable\nfeatures for a price tag under $40,000. Subaru is on a winning streak, having\njust achieved 10 consecutive years of record sales. Ascent broadens its\naudience to members of the minivan set who want or need the seating capacity\nand flexibility, but have a bit of an adventurous spirit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subaru Ascent is available in four all-wheel\ndrive trim levels with Subaru X-Mode: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Base ($31,995), Premium ($34,195), Limited\n($38,995), Touring ($44,695) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Price as tested:<\/strong> $36,630 (Premium with $1,460 option package)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fuel economy as tested (city\/highway\/combined):<\/strong> 21\/27\/23<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I Loved:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

To begin with, top-notch safety ratings, standard all-wheel drive, X-Mode with hill-descent control to bolster its off-road chops. Even though it has high enough ground clearance for adventuring, the step-in height is comfortably low for all passengers. It\u2019s an excellent everyday driver and perfect family road-trip vehicle at a great price point. I also love the plethora of available USB ports, and Auto Vehicle Hold, which keeps the vehicle in place at a stop without having to continuously depress the brake pedal. And EyeSight Assist Monitor, which provides system information on the windshield in front of the driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I Didn\u2019t:<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a very minor thing, mostly attributable to user error, but\u2026 Our Ascent Premium came with the power rear liftgate with programmable height setting. At one point, I inadvertently set it to open only about halfway, and it took a trip to the owner\u2019s manual to reset it. If tech confounds you, there may be a slight learning curve, albeit less than you\u2019ll find with many new vehicles.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Subaru’s biggest vehicle ever.
