While car designer Gordon Murray will always be best known to automotive enthusiasts as the originator and key designer of the concept which eventually became the McLaren F1 supercar, he is quickly reinventing himself from the ground up.\u00a0 Several years ago Murray assembled Gordon Murray Design, a boutique\u00a0design and consulting group.\u00a0 Murray could use this small outfit to make a comfortable living as a consultant to supercar outfits and F1 teams, but instead he has grown into the role of the visionary.\u00a0 His latest vision, the T.27 electric city car, is so revolutionary, so altering of the concept of what may be possible, that soon cars like the Nissan Leaf and the Toyota Prius will seem like relics of a past noble attempt quickly surpassed by a superior genius and sense of invention.<\/p>\n

Gordon Murray Design\u2019s\u00a0 T.27 electric city car achieved a clean sweep in the second running of the RAC\u00a0 Future Car Challenge on Saturday.\u00a0 The T.27 competed against\u00a0 more than 65 entries including the latest technology from 11 major car\u00a0 manufacturers.\u00a0 The lightweight city car won \u2018Most Energy Efficient\u00a0 Small Car (Prototype)\u2019, \u2018Best Overall Pure Electric Vehicle\u2019 and \u2018Best Overall\u00a0 Entry \u2013 RAC Future Car Challenge Winner\u2019.<\/p>\n

The T.27 covered the 57.13\u00a0 miles from Brighton to London carrying 2 occupants, inside the allocated time\u00a0 using less than 64 pence worth of energy \u2013 Equivalent to 350 MPG (0.81 litres \/\u00a0 100 km) and only 37 gm CO2\u00a0 \/ km.\u00a0 On\u00a0 a full charge, taking only 4 hours, the T.27 can do more than 100 miles.<\/p>\n

Gordon Murray Design chose\u00a0 the RAC Future Car Challenge to be the T.27\u2019s public running debut after the\u00a0 car\u2019s launch in July this year as \u201cThe World\u2019s Most Efficient Electric\u00a0 Car\u201d.\u00a0 The RAC Future Car Challenge is\u00a0 the most relevant event in the world to demonstrate new automotive green technology as it is run in real world traffic conditions producing easy to\u00a0 understand results and bypassing all the advertising hype.<\/p>\n

What sets the T.27 apart from all other “competitors” is its weight.\u00a0 Gordon Murray comes from the world of racing design, a world which is based in weight efficiency, which depends on stripping away all excess for the sake of maximum efficiency.\u00a0\u00a0It was here, in the world of F1 racing, where\u00a0Murray received his PhD in efficiency.\u00a0 Murray said in a press release:<\/p>\n

\u201cLightweight is the most powerful tool we have in our armoury in the fight\u00a0 against emissions and fuel consumption.\u00a0\u00a0 This is true of all cars and especially so with electric vehicles! A\u00a0 lightweight car means a lightweight battery increasing the levels of safety and\u00a0 reducing the retail price dramatically.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
