For decades BMW reigned supreme over the world of DTM racing.\u00a0 DTM stands for Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, a touring racing series.\u00a0 Initially and primarily based in Germany, it has in recent years branched out to hold racing events throughout the European continent, making it more than a mere race, but rather a touring action car show in which various auto manufacturers can show off their most recent high performance concepts and components.\u00a0 For reasons both political and financial, BMW has been conspicuously absent from the DTM world for two decades, but their oft speculated return is now imminent.<\/p>\n

Just before the weekend BMW unveiled its new M3 DTM concept car, a racing vehicle designed not only as a concept car for BMW, but also designed to crash back into the DTM world with bang.\u00a0 Dr. Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for development, and BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt unveiled the car on Friday evening in the Double Cone building at Munich’s BMW Welt.<\/p>\n

“It is good to see how our DTM project is picking up speed,” said Dr. Draeger. “Next year, BMW returns to the DTM after two decades. We will be facing our main competitors in the premium sector \u2013 and are already looking forward to this challenge. The DTM comeback sees BMW return to its roots. We have enjoyed great success in production car racing in the past, and I am convinced we will follow on in 2012 where we left off. Everyone at BMW Motorsport is working hard to ensure we get off to a successful start next season.”<\/p>\n

But the success of a racing concept rests not only upon the shoulders of the design team, but, of course, upon the shoulders of the professional racers holding their own behind the wheel.<\/p>\n

“The DTM will be a big challenge for us all,” said Priaulx, one of two pro drivers selected to man the wheel when the concept vehicle hits the circuit next year. “Together with BMW, I have celebrated success in many different disciplines and behind the wheel of some fantastic racing cars in recent years. I am more than confident that this will also be the case in the DTM. The BMW M3 DTM looks fantastic. I can hardly wait to get to know the car better in the coming tests, to contribute to its development, and ultimately to sit in the cockpit for the first DTM race in 2012.”<\/p>\n
