{"id":10806,"date":"2011-05-25T06:16:43","date_gmt":"2011-05-25T13:16:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/?p=10806"},"modified":"2011-05-22T11:30:44","modified_gmt":"2011-05-22T18:30:44","slug":"lamour-fou-new-film-about-yves-saint-laurent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/scottsdale-fashion-flash\/lamour-fou-new-film-about-yves-saint-laurent","title":{"rendered":"L&#8217;Amour Fou &#8211; New Film About Yves Saint Laurent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There have been many fashion films to speak of over the last few years from \u201cThe September Issue\u201d to &#8220;Valentino The Last Emperor&#8221; and dozens more in between but the latest biography which opened this past weekend in Los Angeles called &#8220;L&#8217;Amour Fou,\u201d centers around Yves Saint Laurent and lifelong partner, businessman Pierre Berg\u00e9, as he comes to terms with the death of the designer.<\/p>\n<p>The 2009 auction of their extravagant art collection sets the framework for the story and brings up issues of love and loss, as they relate to material possessions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065125\/yves_saint_laurent11_2002year.jpg\"><img  loading=\"lazy\"  decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065125\/yves_saint_laurent11_2002year-80x55.jpg\"  alt=\"\"  title=\"yves_saint_laurent11_2002year\"  width=\"580\"  height=\"400\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10807 pk-lqip pk-lazyload\"  data-pk-sizes=\"auto\"  data-ls-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\"  data-pk-src=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065125\/yves_saint_laurent11_2002year.jpg\"  data-pk-srcset=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065125\/yves_saint_laurent11_2002year.jpg 580w, https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065125\/yves_saint_laurent11_2002year-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065125\/yves_saint_laurent11_2002year-380x262.jpg 380w, https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065125\/yves_saint_laurent11_2002year-80x55.jpg 80w\" ><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The film opens with Saint Laurent giving his televised retirement speech in 2002, during which he says he is proud to have created the modern women&#8217;s wardrobe. For him, fashion exists not only to make women beautiful but &#8220;to reassure them so they can assert themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Back then designers it seems had a loftier purpose in mind when creating wearable, practical and modern pieces. For Laurent designing safari jackets, trench coats, peasant blouses and  \u201cLe Smoking\u201d &#8220;played a part in the transformation of his time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065127\/yves1.jpg\"><img  loading=\"lazy\"  decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065127\/yves1-80x54.jpg\"  alt=\"\"  title=\"yves1\"  width=\"600\"  height=\"408\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10808 pk-lqip pk-lazyload\"  data-pk-sizes=\"auto\"  data-ls-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"  data-pk-src=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065127\/yves1.jpg\"  data-pk-srcset=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065127\/yves1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065127\/yves1-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065127\/yves1-380x258.jpg 380w, https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065127\/yves1-80x54.jpg 80w\" ><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Laurent and Berge\u2019 lived the 1960s and &#8217;70s, to the fullest, with three lavish homes \u2014 in Paris, Marrakech and Normandy \u2014 and an art collection that fetched $483.8 million on the auction block which went to support the Fondation Yves Saint Laurent charity. <\/p>\n<p>In the film, Berg\u00e9 speaks poignantly about attending to and arranging the collection&#8217;s &#8220;funeral&#8221; and hoping the rare and precious pieces will &#8220;fly off like birds and find a new place they can perch.&#8221; He adds, &#8220;But losing someone with whom you have lived for 50 years, whose eyes you closed \u2026 that is another thing entirely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The LA Times reports that the film is full of riveting historical footage of runway shows, the Palace nightclub, the Opium perfume launch and ballerina Zizi Jeanmaire dancing in a spectacular pink flower costume created by Saint Laurent. There are personal photographs from Saint Laurent&#8217;s archives, too, of his model muses Loulou de la Falaise and Betty Catroux and his friends Maria Callas and Andy Warhol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065131\/yves-saint-laurent-pierre-berge_271.jpg\"><img  loading=\"lazy\"  decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065131\/yves-saint-laurent-pierre-berge_271-80x54.jpg\"  alt=\"\"  title=\"yves-saint-laurent-pierre-berge_27\"  width=\"575\"  height=\"385\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10810 pk-lqip pk-lazyload\"  data-pk-sizes=\"auto\"  data-ls-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\"  data-pk-src=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065131\/yves-saint-laurent-pierre-berge_271.jpg\"  data-pk-srcset=\"https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065131\/yves-saint-laurent-pierre-berge_271.jpg 575w, https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065131\/yves-saint-laurent-pierre-berge_271-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065131\/yves-saint-laurent-pierre-berge_271-380x254.jpg 380w, https:\/\/media.arizonafoothillsmagazine.com\/afm-style-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/22065131\/yves-saint-laurent-pierre-berge_271-80x54.jpg 80w\" ><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Berg\u00e9 surmises that had he died first, Saint Laurent never would have organized the auction. &#8220;He would not have been able to live without this painting or that statue,&#8221; Berg\u00e9 says. &#8220;It would have been like a black hole, he would have had vertigo.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>At last, the day of the auction arrives, and Berg\u00e9 solemnly takes his seat. He watches the spoils of his love being picked apart. The Goya painting, the dragon chair, the Brancusi sculpture &#8220;Portrait of Madame L.R.&#8221; that goes for $26 million. It makes you think about the sum total of someone&#8217;s life, and question the reasoning behind accumulating so much stuff, whether it be art \u2014 or fashion.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Berg\u00e9 doesn&#8217;t seem to mourn the loss of the pieces so much as the memory of the person who shared them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;L&#8217;Amour Fou,&#8221; in French with English subtitles, opens Friday at the Laemmle Royal Theatre in West L.A. and the Laemmle Playhouse 7 in Pasadena.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There have been many fashion films to speak of over the last few years
