We may not all want to relive our twenty-something years, but us women sure want twenty-something looking skin. Although we can’t stop our body clock from ticking, we can make a few lifestyle changes and enhancements to slow our visual aging process, while also living healthier lives. Step one…

  1. Avoid the Sun and Wear Sunscreen: Sun damage is proven to be the number one cause for wrinkles. However, living in Arizona makes it almost impossible to avoid sun exposure. So it’s important to always wear sunscreen.  It’s most convenient to purchase a daily moisturizer that includes at least 15 SPF.
  2. Drink a lot of H2O: Dehydration is a key cause for visible aging. Well-hydrated skin is smoother and has greater elasticity - enabling expressions to snap back in place.
  3. Don’t Smoke: Many studies have shown that smoking expedites skin aging. “Smoking releasing an enzyme that breaks down collagen and elastin, important components of the skin.” 
  4. Moisturize Your Skin After Washing: Dry skin can cause wrinkles and a simple daily moisturizer creates smoother, silkier skin.
  5. Reduce Stress in Your Life: Sometimes stress can show up on our faces. Harsh expressions can cause stress lines. Yoga practice is a great way to alleviate stress.
  6. Get Adequate Sleep & Sleep on Your Back. Dermatologists have found that a good nights rest (8-10 hours) helps the skin remain thick, more “elastic” and prevents wrinkles. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says sleeping on your stomach creates “sleep lines” on the cheeks and chin, so it’s best to try to sleep on your back.
  7. Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables. Fruits and vegies contain antioxidant compounds that fight damages caused by free radicals, which sun damaging.
  8. Exercise: Exercising is of course healthy for our bodies in many ways. As for the skin, exercising requires deep breathing and oxygen is vital for healthy skin.
  9. Drink Green Tea: “Green tea contains a cocktail of potent antioxidants called catechins, which help fight damage caused by free radicals,” according to green tea experts. This will help fight off sun damage areas.
  10. Eat More Fish, Especially Salmon: “Not only is salmon (along with other cold-water fish) a great source of protein — one of the building blocks of great skin — it’s also an awesome source of an essential fatty acid known as omega-3. Perricone tells WebMD that essential fatty acids help nourish skin and keep it plump and youthful, helping to reduce wrinkles,” according to WebMD.

  3. Thanks for teh tips, drinking water and sleep is so importnat. I see so many women in their 50s and 60s and you can tell who was a smoker, sho did not protect themselves from the sun. The worst thing is to see a older man or women with sun damage. So preventable.

  7. Taking fish oil is supposed to help also, but it tastes gross! Most of these things are common sense, easier said than done. I use a tinted moisturizer for makeup…three steps in one! Makeup coverage, sunscreen and moisturizer. Laura Mercier has an AMAZING one - I would say it’s more than just “tinted” as well if you are worried about coverage. And it’s SPF 18
