April’s best superfoods

We’re in the heart of spring, folks, and with good weather comes fresh fruits and vegetables, which, in turn, enables a healthier, more energized you.

Incorporate these April’s best super foods into your diet that will help you maintain your weight, fight disease, and live longer:

Limes

Offering up tons of dietary fiber and Vitamin C, tangy limes pack a ton of flavor and are flexible when it comes to dishes. Use this tiny yet powerful fruit to flavor fish, sweeten up a salad and of course, for key lime pie.

Kohlrabi

Kohlrabit seems to be a lesser known member of the cabbage family, though it shouldn’t go unnoticed since it’s a great source for thiamin, folate, potassium and Vitamin B6. Try frying the vegetable to make Kohlrabit fries or just simply eat raw.

Strawberries

Fueled with Vitamin C, strawberries also serve as a natural teeth whitener. Strawberries work well by themselves or mixed into almost anything, from salads to desserts.

Leeks

A milder take to the onion, leeks are high in potassium and Vitamin C and also provide folate, which studies have suggested can help reduce risk of coronary heart disease. Though most usually combined into soups, add leeks to salads and pasta for extra zest.

Swiss Chard

Throw in about one cup of Swiss chard into your salad or cooked alone, which lends far more than a day’s value of Vitamin K, in addition to healthy doses of Vitamins A and C.

Asparagus
Asparagus serves as an excellent source of fiber, folate, vitamins A, C, E and K, as well as chromium, a trace mineral that enhances the ability of insulin to transport glucose from the bloodstream into cells. Not to mention, the super green food is packed with age-defying antioxidants. Try asparagus as a side dish to complement a poultry or fish dish.

Guava
Vitamins A and C are active in this tangy, colorful fruit, as well as potassium and magnesium. Enjoy as-is or add to some salsa for a twist.
