From a wave-simulator to fun activities taking place poolside (hello, watermelon-eating contests and tie-dye shirt-making) all day long, The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa is a top spot for a family-friendly Scottsdale-based staycation.

From the moment you step foot into your room at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, the kids--the whole family, in fact--will know that you have arrived at someplace special. The bathtub and mirror features a colorful welcome message, and the staff has left behind a beach ball and rubber duckie to make bathtime much more fun. And even the young ones won't resist bedtime, as Westin's super-comfy famous Heavenly Beds will offer up the sweetest dreams.

The water features at Westin Kierland are sure to be a huge draw during Arizona's hot, hot summer months, so it is best to reserve a spot in one of the amenity-packed cabanas or a few cushion-topped loungers in the upper deck that surrounds the pool. Before the swimming and splashing commence, order up some grub at J. Swilling’s Pool Bar & Grill, which will be delivered directly to your lounge chair. The little ones will love a frosty Kierland Cooler and kid-approved eats like mac and cheese and chicken fingers. Mom and Dad can fill up with the California Wrap, with grilled chicken, Monterey Jack cheese, blistered corn, bacon, lettuce and avocado-lime aioli in a spinach tortilla, or the Surfside Tacos with adobe shrimp. After warming up under the sun, the perfect way to cool down is with a J. Swilling's smoothie in flavors like strawberry and pina colada.

Westin Kierland's Adventure Pool is where the action is. (There is a heated adult pool, too.) Kids and adults alike can catch a wave on the Kierland Flowrider, or, for another thrill ride, line up at the 110-foot waterside. For a more relaxing activity, wade along the 900-foot winding lazy river where you can take in waterfalls and beautiful desert landscape along the way.  The little ones will love the splash pad that is only steps away from the main Adventure Pool, so parents can still keep on eye on the older kids who are swimming.

Though it is easy to spend an entire day enjoying the resort water features, don't forget to check the Westin Kierland's daily activity schedule, hosted by the FUN team. Savor storytime, a poolside luau, a watermelon-eating contest, making tie-dye T-shirts and much more. With new family-friendly activities added every day, there will be plenty of reason to schedule a second summer staycation at Westin Kierland.
