Commemorate “the most exciting two minutes in sports” on May 7 with special dining events and specials throughout the Valley.
Celebrate in grand Southern style at Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess with a Kentucky Derby brunch and lawn party, 1 to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, May 7. Executive Chef Jeremy McMillan’s brunch menu is filled with Southern flair, featuring Kentucky Derby hot browns, Benedictine dip, pickled shrimp toasts, sweet tea brined fried chicken, buttermilk oyster sliders, house-smoked Andouille sausage, Kentucky burgoo, beef tenderloin skewers with Henry Bain sauce, beer cheese and pimento cheese. Sweet sensations include chess pie, red velvet cupcakes, Bourbon bars and Derby pie. The brunch includes a commemorative Kentucky Derby glass and three complimentary cocktails. Race-watchers can also get in the spirit by enjoying a classic mint julep (pictured) prepared with Bourbon Steak’s exclusive bottling of Bulleit 10-year bourbon paired with a hand-rolled Bulleit-seasoned cigar. Derby fans will view their favorite silks during the world’s premier horse-racing event on plasma screens indoors and out, with complete Derby coverage from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.  with the estimated race time at 3:34 p.m., Arizona time. There will also be a sing-a-long of “My Old Kentucky Home” just before the post parade. Since the Derby is just as much about fashion as it is horse racing, women of grace and taste are encouraged to complete their Derby look with their most stylish hats, while dapper gents might sport seersucker, both with a chance to win prizes from an esteemed panel of judges. Prizes include a beautiful hat for the ladies, dinner for two in Bourbon Steak and a weekend getaway to the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. Outside on the “Winner’s Circle” lawn, guests can pose for a “selfie” with a thoroughbred race horse, enjoy a spring day on Bourbon Steak’s patio or play horseshoes and other lawn games. At Bink’s Kitchen + Bar in Scottsdale, the Peach Mint Julep was created especially for the Kentucky Derby (check back later this week for the recipe). The restaurant at Hilton Village will also be featuring a special dish for the big race: An open-faced turkey sandwich on white toast covered in Mornay, topped with bacon and tomato.
On Saturday, May 7 at 8:30 a.m., Padre Murphy’s, will be opening their doors early for a Derby Day celebration. Beginning with breakfast (served until 11:30 a.m.), the festivities include a variety of drink specials, off-track betting, a live telecast of the 142nd Kentucky Derby (airing from 1 to 4:30 p.m.) on 90-plus TV’s and a Derby Day hat contest at 2 p.m. All participants in the contest will receive a special prize; however, the winner will receive a $100 happy hour at Padre Murphy’s, second place will a $50 gift card to Gaston Jewelry Store and third place receives a dozen red roses.
At Okra Cookhouse & Cocktails in Phoenix, enjoy a fun and tasty celebration for the America’s biggest horse race on Saturday, May 7. Catch all of the action at Okra while enjoy Southern-style eats such as fried chicken skins with habanero honey, tomato salad with pepper vinegar, avocado and goat feta, country ham bolognese & biscuits and much more. Plus, enjoy Okra’s award-winning handcrafted cocktails, including $5 mint juleps and classic Old Fashioned and French 75.
From 1 to 5 p.m. at Southern Rail, enjoy $6 mint juleps, Chef Beckett’s tasty dishes with a Southern twist, and a good dose of Southern hospitality. There will be multiple screens to watch the day’s events, with the big race starting at 3:34 p.m. Derby attire is encouraged, and Southern Rail will award prizes for best men and women’s hats, plus a “best dressed overall” category.
On May 7, stop by for Kelly’s at Southbridge‘s viewing party and enjoy classic Jim Beam mint juleps and refreshing Champagne while you cheer on your favorite horse. Don’t forget to come dressed to the nines! Kelly’s will be giving away prizes for the best Kentucky Derby-inspired hat.
The Phoenician’s signature viewing party for the 142nd Run for the Roses will be held on the Orchid Lawn. The afternoon will feature classic, Southern-style cuisine; a best hat contest for the ladies; best Southern fashion for the gentlemen; a winner’s circle raffle and a complimentary, personalized engraving for each purchased bottle of Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon.  Guests will also receive two complimentary drink tickets and a keepsake cup. A portion of the proceeds will benefit After the Homestretch – Arizona, providing forever homes for former racehorses.  Guests will also have the opportunity to meet and take photos with one of the organization’s four-legged members.
Housed in the heart of Scottsdale’s entertainment district, the Bevvy is hosting a blowout Kentucky Derby party on Saturday, May 7. Get in on all the action with onsite off-track-betting, as well as watch (and hear) the race on the 30-plus flat-screen TVs. Enjoy contests for “Best Hat,” “Best Dressed” (male and female) with winners receiving amazing prizes. Bevvy will be expanding its patios into a “Woodford Lounge,” which will extra seating and mobile bars. Plus, in celebration of the Derby, the Bevvy will be mixing up special Kentucky Derby Cocktails for the day featuring Woodford Reserve bourbon. These reserve cocktails are specials for the Derby and include the official drink of the Derby, the Classic Mint Julep, plus unique julep variations including Candied Julep and Enchanted Julep.  Plus, the Bevvy will be serving up their signature menu of gastro-pub favorites for the Derby. After the Race, stick around as the Bevvy will be showing the Alvarez/Khan fight on the big screens.
