Foodie news roundup for the week of Oct. 3.
Every Tuesday is girls night out at The Wing Counter in Glendale. Ladies get a Kool-Aid cocktail or beer for just $2 with wing purchase.
On Tuesday, Oct. 11, which also happens to be National Sausage Pizza Day, all Fired Pie locations will offer half off their sausage pizza with the purchase of any drink. This is for sausage pizzas only.
Six of the Valley best chefs will be going head-to-head this October in a burger battle competition. Two chefs will compete each week, starting Sunday, Oct. 9, in head-to-head competitions, with the winner moving on to the championship match on Oct. 30 (dates are Oct. 9, 16, 23, and 30).  Hosted at Okra Cookhouse & Cocktails, the Burger Battle will feature Kelly Fletcher of Zen, Gio Osso of Virtu and Nico Heirloom Kitchen, host Cullen Campbell of Crudo and Okra Cookhouse & Cocktails, Doug Robson of Otro, Justin Beckett of Beckett’s Table and Southern Rail and Chris Newstrom of Upward Projects.  Celebrity judges will be on hand to judge each week’s competition.  Diners can come in and watch the competition, plus try each chef’s creation. In addition, Okra will feature their traditional Sunday specials including all day happy hour, half-off bottles of wine and mixologist Micah Olson will be creating some special Tito’s cocktails and punch to serve at the Burger Battle. Battles start at 3 p.m., but get there early because the burgers will run out.  A portion of the proceeds to goes to C-CAP, which helps young men and women start their career in the culinary arts industry.
On Saturday, Oct. 15, from 7 to 10 p.m., Emerging Leaders and DeSoto Central Market will host Rock Out!, an 80’s rock-inspired food and drink festival to benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital. An extended version of the Valley’s popular 7 Chef Series, Rock Out! will feature 12 local chefs (including Gio Osso, Cullen Campbell and Stephen Jones) with local wine, craft brews and cocktails, and appearances by DJ Mr. Phoenix and Sweet Cherry Pie, a local 80’s cover band. The 21-and-over event will benefit Condition Critical, a campaign to build a new Emergency Department and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center at Phoenix Children’s. To purchase tickets, visit www.pchrockout.com.
In honor of October being National Pizza Month, Sauce Pizza & Wine is hosting their annual Build Your Own Pizza, or “BYOP,” contest. Now through Oct. 17, guests will be able to submit (in store or via https://www.facebook.com/saucepizzaandwine) or in-store.their very own pizza recipe for a chance to win a $200 Sauce gift card and have his/her pizza featured on the menu during the month of November. During the month, $1 from each pizza sold will be donated to the winner’s charity, as well.
Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar in Scottsdale has rolled out an all-new seasonal brunch menu, as well as a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar (pictured), where guests can craft their own custom cocktail with dozens of savory and delicious toppings and mixers for $8 per drink. Served weekends from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the new menu includes Egg in Purgatory (grilled cheese, reggiano-san marzano tomatoes, short ribs, sunny-side-up egg and basil) and Two Potato Hash and more. Plus, kids’ lunch plates are $5.
Brownie Brittle founder, Sheila G. Mains, will debut her first cookbook this fall:  SHEILA G’S BUTTER & CHOCOLATE: 101 Creative Sweets and Treats Using Brownie Batter. Mains will be hosting a cookbook signing at AJ’s Fine Foods located at 44th Street and Camelback from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7.
The family-run creperie, The Crepe Club, will celebrate the opening of its new location in the Biltmore Fashion Park by giving away free crepes on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Guests will be able to get a free Nutella or Parisian (butter and sugar) crepe at the restaurant from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The new location is on the west end of the Fashion Park beside William Sonoma at 2502 E. Camelback Rd., Ste. 130.
Okra Cookhouse & Cocktails is hosting a three-course Southern-style dinner featuring Arizona’s own Homeboy’s Hot Sauce and chef Stephen Jones of the larder+ the delta. Held on Monday, Oct. 10, with two separate seatings at 6 and 8 p.m., tickets to this can’t-miss culinary throw-down are $35 plus tax and gratuity per person. Plus, enjoy your choice of perfectly paired wine or craft cocktails for an additional $15 or $20, respectively. Reservations are required by calling 602.296.4147.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Salty Sow in Scottsdale will be offering a specialty “Pink Drink,” its house Blanche margarita, for the special price of $5 Monday through Sunday.  The margarita is made with gold tequila, triple sec, margarita mix, and blood orange puree.
