Emily was due to be euthanized simply because the local pound was full- she was very frightened in her kennel and was passed over time after time. Well, we didn't pass her over. This special little girl has turned around very quickly in a loving environment. She is a polite, easy to love dog, great around other dogs big or small and very gentle with children. She seems to be housetrained and walks great on the leash. Emily is 18 months old.

According to an October 9th NBC News article by Emily Friedman, large black dogs tend to be the last ones to be adopted from shelters. There are a few theories as to why. Many shelters offer no natural lighting, making it hard for the face of a black dog to stand out - it is more difficult to distinguish their facial features than it would be in lighter colored dogs or those with contrasting markings.

Kim Saunders, the head of shelter outreach for the Web site Petfinder.com, believes that black dogs are overlooked because they don't photograph as well as lighter colored animals. When people are shopping for the next love of their lives, they are looking for a face that stands out with special appeal. Some theorize that it is human nature to be drawn to things with more vibrant color or riveting hair coat patterns. Well, we love black dogs and Emily is a beauty and would be a great addition to any active family.

I am a professional photographer. It's true dark colored dogs don't photograph as easily as lighter colored dogs.

I always adjust dark colored dog images so their actual hairs/coat can stand out.

It's a shame dark colored dogs aren't adopted more.

I've had many dogs in my lifetime. One of my favorites was my black lab named Coke (as in Coca-Cola). She was a very mild mannered and loveable dog. She loved to be hugged!

I have a black lab I adopted from Luck Dog Rescue and he did not look too cute when we first saw him but once we got him home and gave him a good bath his fur fluffed up and then once his personality came through he became the cutest dog ever!!
