Foods that are GREAT to eat before bed

We have all heard the myths of, “Can’t eat past 7pm”, or “No late night snacking” if you want to lose weight and fat. Well, I am here to tell you that this isn’t entirely true. In fact, if you want to sleep better and also maintain muscle while you sleep there are a handful of foods that are awesome to eat and won’t increase that waist size.

-When Hunger Strikes, Eat Something
When hunger hits it’s important to take note. A rumbling stomach can actually prevent you from falling asleep or wake you up mid-slumber. It can also increase the risk of burning lean muscle while you sleep. Plus, not giving into your body’s natural hunger cues at night can drain your energy in the morning, causing you to overeat later in the day.

Here’s a good rule of thumb: Avoid carbs before bed in favor of slow-digesting, high-quality protein.

Carbohydrate consumption causes a significant rise in the storage hormone insulin, which also puts the breaks on fat burning. Instead, slow-digesting proteins provide your body with a steady flow of amino acids throughout the night to help you recover from exercise and maintain your calorie-burning lean muscle as you lose fat.

I was just featured on Fox 10 news and provided some options for acceptable foods before bed :

1. Greek yogurt: contains protein as well as calcium.

2. Casein protein or cottage cheese: slow digesting proteins

3. Almonds or peanut butter: pair it with the yogurt or casein and helps to slow digestion.

4. Turkey: lean protein and helps to relax (contains tryptophan)

5. Eggs:  lean protein and contains amino acids
