Hair SOS! Your Workout Hair Woes Solved

Does your hair look like this after your workout? Time to tame your tresses
Does your hair look like this after your workout? Time to tame your tresses

I love working out; I do not love what it does to my hair. I step out of yoga class with some serious frizz (picture a halo of whispies). Not attractive. Plus, all those post-workout showers make my scalp mad and itchy. And I’m not the only one with hair complaints; a study out of Wake Forest University found that 2 out of 5 women admitted to avoiding the gym so they wouldn’t mess up their dos. But working up a sweat doesn’t have to work your hair into a frenzy, not with these hair DOs…

Problem: Post-workout frizz & ponytail creases
Sometimes you don’t have time for a post-workout shower, and your hair shows it
Fix: For me, a loose topknot instead of a ponytail avoids the dreaded “dent.” I usually pile my hair on top of my head wet (it sorta looks like a loose mess), and the sweat session can even make it look more voluminous when I let it down. After class, I scrunch with Peter Lamas Chinese Herb Nutrient Mist (it hydrates and tames frizzies) and I’m good to go.

Problem: Dry scalp and lackluster locks
Exercising in the elements and all that post-workout hair washing can dry hair out.
The Fix: First off, you don’t have to wash your hair after every workout. Too much shampooing can strip your scalp of natural oils, so feel free to skip the shampoo and just wet your hair instead. A great hair mask or leave-in conditioner can also transform tresses. My favorite moisture-infusing product is John Masters Organics Citrus & Neroli Detangler. I put it in after shampooing and leave it on overnight. Sleep SOS! It’s packed full of nutrient-rich organic ingredients and lightweight enough not to weigh my hair down. The next morning I rinse and my hair is in heaven.  And did I mention that it smells divine! My scalp also LOVES Lather Sea Kelp & Ginseng All Over Mask, a fab multi-purpose product that works on the body and face too. It’s got antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to soothe scalp complaints, plus it moisturizes locks. Apply to damp hair and leave on overnight.

Problem: Sun-damaged, chorine-damaged hair
Exercising in the elements can leave hair brassy and brittle.
Fix: Don’t just sunblock your skin; protect your hair too from damaging UV rays. I love Phyto Phytoplage Protective Sun Veil, an SPF hair product that prevents fading and adds shine. For swimmers, Malibu C Swimmers Wellness Kit (a triple threat of shampoo, conditioner and 4 hair treatments) can prevent icky chlorine buildup and discoloration. A gloss or glaze treatment at your salon can also work wonders.
