As we all know too well, New Year’s Resolutions are nothing without a game plan. You need a strategy to pull them off or you’re destined to join the majority of Americans who throw in the towel by January 17, the official ditch day. But not Jeremy Heath, a local marathoner who set a lofty running resolution and started a blog, Confessions of an Amateur Athlete, in part to keep accountable. Read on for Jeremy’s resolution and his strategies for success…

3 Secrets for Sticking with your New Year’s Resolutions…
Perfect weather in Arizona means everyone is out hitting the trails or pounding pavement. And everyone has a new goal in mind. Mine? PR (Personal Record) in a few races and run 2,014km in 2014! But sticking to those goals is the hard part!

One trick I use to stay motivated is “rewarding” myself as I reach certain milestones or finish key workouts. Those rewards should be small… taking the dog for a walk doesn’t mean you should help yourself to extra birthday cake at the office. Instead, make the reward reasonable, but something you’ll look forward to. For example, a friend and I have a hard workout tomorrow morning. Afterwards, we’ll treat ourselves to breakfast at a new local restaurant. That little reward will be what helps drag me out of bed and pushes me through. Plus, it’s a great way to give back to your community!

Another way to stay motived this year is find a friend to workout with you. When you have someone waiting for you, it’s a lot harder to shrug off. Plus, you can push each other further.  And when you have someone to share those triumphs with, it makes it that much more rewarding!

A great way to keep your eyes on the prize is to keep those goals in plain sight every day! You can write them on Post-its and place them on your bathroom mirror or fridge.

Good luck to you on those 2014 resolutions and happy running!
