Musicology: Where the Cool Kids (and their Parents) Go

If you’re a new mom, you’re about to learn a Valley secret amongst moms in the know. Parents around Phoenix who want to have fun with their tots and provide an early advantage to learning and socialization take them to Musicology.

About Musicology

Musicology is an enhanced music program designed specifically for newborns through 3-year olds. Parents (or grandparents, nannies, etc.) are in attendance for that important one on one time with their child, and you really can’t leave a baby or infant alone yet, while an experienced teacher orchestrates the class. Classes are divided into specific developmental age groups to promote language, rhythm, motor skills, self-esteem, creativity and joy. Music is the one activity that lights up all areas of the brain. When a baby is first born her brain is only 25% wired for how she will learn, and by age 3 her brain is 90% wired. Research shows that exposure to specific types of musical activities wires the brain for language, reading, math and motor skills while nurturing emotional and social development. Musicology is proud to be partnered with New Directions Institute For Infant Brain Development (NDI) founded by Dr. Jill Stamm. The innovative music curriculum is guided by research outlined in Dr. Stamm’s bestselling book “Bright From The Start – The Simple, Science-Backed Way to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind From Birth to Age 3.”

What to Expect

Classes consist of a teacher leading a group of tots and parents / caregivers. First, everyone introduces himself or herself and their child and answers a question of the day, such as what their kid’s favorite book is, their current nighttime routine or what the newest favorite toy is. This gives caregivers a chance to learn more about each other and evokes conversation amongst adults whom have kids around the same ages. Teachers then lead a themed class with such activities as singing / teaching new songs, dancing, playing with toys including new instruments, feathers, parachutes – anything that prompts creativity, learning and fun.

Mom Approved

As a mom to a ten month old, I can attest to how awesome Musicology is. My daughter, Mia Valentina, and I have been attending since she was about two months old. I was stunned at how in tune she was and how much she picked up at class. I believe Musicology has helped advance her motor skills as well as launched her love of social settings. The staff at Musicology welcomes adult guests, so dad and grandparents can also experience a Musicology class with us. As a newer mom, I have loved the ability to meet new moms with children around Mia’s age. Let’s face it, as we have children our social scene changes, so it’s so important to meet new people that share new common interests. Not only for play dates, but the occasional mommy happy hour when your kids are at home with dad.
