Salvation Army: Hygiene Means Hope

Tempe Feeding

The Salvation Army's calling is to feed, to clothe, to comfort, to care. And thanks to the generous support of local residents, essentials like Hygiene Kits are provided to homeless adults, children and families in need.

Homeless people often go without the basic necessities most Americans take for granted. Amidst the struggle to find food and a safe place to sleep, it's difficult to acquire basic items like soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, etc.

In the United States alone, an estimated 3.5 million people per year experience homelessness. On any given night, 730,000 people find themselves without a permanent roof over their heads. The lucky ones are given space in homeless shelters where a place to sleep and a warm meal are provided.

Whether they come to The Salvation Army's shelter or Project Hope staff go out to meet them on the street, it's important to provide them with the basic hygiene supplies needed to maintain health and confidence. This can help give the homeless people a greater sense of self-worth and a brighter outlook on life.

That's why The Salvation Army is collecting items for Hygiene Kits that will be distributed to people in need. These kits include simple, inexpensive items that can be picked up at the drugstore or while grocery shopping, such as:

• Body Wash, Washcloths, Lotion • Shampoo, Conditioner, Brushes, Combs • Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Floss • Deodorant, Feminine Hygiene Products • Toilet Paper, Cleansing Wipes, Tissue • Antibacterial Ointment, Bandages

Every Monday through Friday, a Project Hope outreach specialist drives to parks and washes all over the city to distribute these kits. They're also handed out at The Salvation Army's annual Thanksgiving Dinner held at the convention center on Thanksgiving Day.
