On Wednesday, April 9th,Sleep America and KSLX Morning DJ, Mark Mayfield, will kick off their eighth annual “Get in Bed with Mark” Food Drive for St. Mary’s Food Bank.  The three day live radio promotion will kick off at Sleep America’s Town & Country location on 20th Street & Highland at 5:00 a.m. on April 9th and run until Friday, April 11th.

KSLX Morning show host Mayfield will literally get in bed—aboard a flat bed truck—and stay in bed until the Sleep America truck is filled with food.  Local celebrities will make visits to show their support and help get Mark out of bed.  Every person who drops off canned food and/or donates money will be eligible to enter to win the queen size Kingsdown bed Mark will be on for three days.

Sleep America is proud to bring back its much anticipated “Great Bed Race for Charity.”  Teams will raise food and money for the food bank while competing for awards such as “Fastest Team,” “Best Decorated Bed” and “Favorite Sleepwear.”  The Bed Race will be held on April 11th at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Sleep America Town & Country store.

“We tend to think about donating food only around the major holidays, but people need to eat 365 days a year,” said Mayfield.  “We might not be able to save the whole world, but we’re committed to doing what we can to at least help those in our area.” “We’ve been looking forward to this event all year!  It’s our goal to raise enough food in hopes that no one goes to bed hungry this spring,” said Debbie Gaby, Sleep America President.

Sleep America locations statewide are serving as drop-off points throughout the month of April.  Last year the event collected over 15,000 lbs. of non-perishable food items and $25,000 in monetary donations. St. Mary’s food bank currently needs non-perishable food items like tuna, beans, pasta, canned vegetables, rice, cereal, juice (in plastic bottles) peanut butter and baby food.  St. Mary’s provides about 275,000 meals a day in Arizona and is dispersed 534 partner agencies at more than 700 sites.  For every $1 dollar donated, St. Mary’s can feed 7 people.
