Phoenix, AZ- (October 21, 2013) Arizona YWCA Metropolitan Phoenix is thrilled to announce its partnership with Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pine Council, to offer a new four week financial literacy class, Mom & Me: Own It Series, providing mothers and daughters with the tools they need to own their financial future.

The YW is proud to be the foremost agency in Maricopa County providing financial education to people from all walks of life, many of whom are among the working poor, struggling to pay their bills and feed their families, despite working 40 hours or more a week. Having provided financial literacy programming since 2006, the YW recognized the need for financial education among younger populations, particularly children and teens. Studies indicate that the financial education of high school students has fallen to its lowest level ever. In 2007, a survey on teens and money reported that only 45% of teens knew how to use a credit card, while just 26% understood credit card interest and fees. (Source: Charles Schwab). The YWCA and the Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pine Council are taking on this issue by investing in our youth, providing them with a financial education that is not necessarily available in their school or home environment.

“It is critical that young women have the support and skills necessary to gain a sense of economic justice, so they can assert rights for their own economic well-being, as well as the economic well-being of their families and their communities,” says Dana Campbell-Saylor, Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA. “It is our responsibility to help them set sound financial goals and attain life skills that will be critical to their success in the future.”

The Mom & Me: Own It Series will teach mothers and daughters how to navigate through today’s financial environment by setting goals, understanding the banking system, understanding the difference between needs and wants, and much more. They will engage in interactive activities to cultivate meaningful conversations about goals, dreams, finances. A gift card and financial literacy tool kit will be provided to families that complete all four sessions.

Classes will be held at the George Benjamin Brooks, Sr. Community School located at 3146 E. Wier Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85041 on four consecutive Saturday mornings, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, October 26 through November 16. Classes are only $5 per family.
