Description

The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy’s Field Institute and research center, will host Junior Citizen Scientist Festival designed for elementary students. The annual event is underwritten by Cox Communications and U-Haul. This Festival will feature a self-guided adventure to lead the students through over 16 interactive, educational booths which feature a look into the mysteries of the Sonoran Desert. Many of the activities tie to STEM curriculum taught in Arizona schools. Students will receive a free goodie bag along with a workbook with activities for each booth. From live raptors to native plants shown in 3D holographic technology, students will learn about plants and animals as well as the Preserve’s geology and human history.

The event will take place at the Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Lost Dog Wash Trailhead and the Kovach Family Nature Trail, Scottsdale, AZ from 9 a.m until 2 p.m. The Lost Dog Wash Trailhead is located on 124th St., 1.1 miles north of Shea Blvd. The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Stewards and Citizen Scientists will be posted at each booth to share their enthusiasm and guide kids through the activities. Citizen Scientists are Conservancy Stewards who are trained to help conduct scientific research on the Preserve. Helen Rowe, Ph.D., the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy’s Field Institute Director, will be available to discuss more in-depth science questions as well as outline the Conservancy’s research priorities over the next five years.The second annual Junior Citizen Scientist Festival is an opportunity for elementary students to have a scientifically-led, hands-on experience to enrich their understanding of the land in which they live. Students, inspired by the beauty of nature, will support efforts to preserve and protect our fragile desert ecosystem. Elementary students and kids who are interested in learning more about the Sonoran Desert and majestic McDowell Mountains. In addition, Cox Communications and U-Haul have sponsored the event, making it possible for nearly 400 elementary school students to attend from around the valley, ensuring that more students get the opportunity to learn more about ecology and their surrounding natural environment.
