For $40, Terranea’s Boot Camp Resort Package offers an hour-long, vigorous “military-style” workout that makes use of the resort’s 102 beautiful coastal acres, followed by access to Terranea’s luxurious oceanfront spa facilities for a relaxing post-workout cool down. The program is open to – and challenging for – men and women alike!

The workout begins at the fitness center at 6 a.m. where participants warm-up with traditional calisthenics by the pool deck. Following the warm-up, the class ventures out around the property, usually by a short jog to get to the next location or, on a particularly hard day, by doing lunges up a steep coastal hill. The class eventually makes its way down to the beach cove to begin speed and agility drills in the sand. Along the way, the class stops at various points for a variety of exercises including tricep dips, push-ups and sprints. The class concludes back at the fitness center where participants are guided through mat work targeting abs and arms, followed by stretching.

After the workout, participants reward themselves with a day of rest and relaxation at the spa which includes a spa café where they can fuel up, as well as a steam, sauna, swimming pool, outdoor hot tub and cold plunge. For an additional fee, guests can indulge in a variety of massage, body treatments and facials.

Terranea’s Boot Camp is offered throughout the year in six-week intervals with the next session beginning July 26, 2010. The program is open to both resort guests and non-guests who can either drop by for a single workout or participate regularly throughout the session. Participants can purchase either the Basic Boot Camp (workout only) or the Resort-Style Boot Camp that includes access to the spa. Prices are as follows:

One of the last things I want to share about Terranea Resort & Spa is the amazing activities you will find here. I was surprised to see the resort totally sold out over Labor Day, but once I wandered around and realized all the things to do, I understood why so many families had chosen to visit for their long weekend.

First off, the pools:
The family pool is like a dream for kids. It’s safe, big, had ocean views and a slide – what more can a little one ask for? The children seemed to be having the time of their lives at the family pool, so I steered clear and went right to the adult Cielo pool, a modern lap pool right down by the ocean, where chic lounge furniture and cool music created a great pool scene. The Cielo bar and cafe offers great drinks and food to enjoy in this adults-only atmosphere.

But if you are more of an ocean person, head a little farther down to the seaside and you’ll find a lovely littel beach, which is a havorite spot for local scuba divers and snorkelers. Sun yourself on the beach loungers or hop right in the water and splash around in the cool Pacific.

One of my favorite activities is the 9-hole golf course, The Links at Terranea. This par-3 walking course is surprisingly challenging, yet easy enough that get some great short game practice in and get to walk away feeling accomplished, not frustrated. I had never walked a course before (I know, I know, I’m lazy and from Scottsdale, where walking is unheard of), but really enjoyed it, especially since there is an ocean view from just about every hole. It’s a very relaxing way to spend the morning or afternoon.

I also noticed a lot of families practicing and taking private lessons on the courses practice facilities, which were in top shape. And I did take a good long look in the small pro shop too and ended up buying a couple of items as souvenirs from my trip.

Over all, there is no shortage of activities at Terranea and it’s truly an ideal spot for a family vacation or a romantic weekend trip for two.

Eating and drinking is a big part of any good weekend away, and at Terranea there are plenty of dining outlets to do just that.

For my first dinner at Terranea, I went to Nelson’s a very casual eatery that is perched above the Pacific. This is a great place for burgers and beer and if full kid-friendly.

I certainly enjoyed my turkey club sandwich at Nelson’s, but for our second dinner, we decided to visit Mar’sel, the resort’s signature restaurant, which is much more formal than the other restaurants on property.  A stunning restaurant with indoor dining and a huge outdoor patio as well, Mar’sel, which is Spanish for “sea” and French for “salt”, is a terrific place to watch the moon rise and the tide come in and out. It’s also a great place to enjoy an amazing meal of modern Californian cuisine and hand-crafted cocktail – oh, and a really great wine list.

Taking advantage of the ocean views, we sat outside on the patio and enjoyed a cocktail to start. I had a glass of rose Champagne while my husband quite enjoyed a gimlet. We shared the beet salad appetizer and then delighted in the main course. I had the salmon and my dinner companion had the halibut – its just so nice to eat fresh seafood by the sea. Also, I almost forgot to mention the delicious the fresh olive bread, served warm.

Since the moon was just rising, we ordered dessert to share while we watched the moon come up. It was truly a perfect evening out, yet so nice to have such a short walk back to our room.

For our daily breakfast, we went to Catalina Kitchen to enjoy the daily breakfast buffet. Breakfast can be ordered a la carte as well, but the buffet is just irresistible, so while on vacation you might as well go all out. Catalina Kitchen is the resort’s three-meal restaurant and is very kid-friendly, so if you want a romantic dinner, skip right over to Mar’sel (or go next door to The Grill) and leave Catalina Kitchen to the families. But for breaky and lunch, it’s perfect.

Also, one word of advice: make reservations, especially if you are at Terranea for a long-weekend. Even though there are numerous restaurants, when the resort is at full capacity you will need a reservation for all your meals unless you are OK with waiting a bit for your table.

At a time when everyone is looking to build the next biggest, longest, hardest golf course, comes the short course game. Terranea joins some of golf’s most storied short course venues…Augusta National, Shinnecock Hills (Southampton), and Pebble Beach.

Terranea’s nine-hole, par three short course and practice area with chipping and putting greens is located on one of the most scenic peninsulas in Southern California with views to the Pacific and Catalina Island.
