Last week I had the pleasure of taking a quick and luxurious four-day vacation down to Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, which is a resort area just about 15 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport. The area is full of gorgeous hotels and resorts, but I believe where I stayed, the Grand Velas All Suites & Spa Resort in Nuevo Vallarta, topped them all. This stunning 267-room all-inclusive resort is rated Five Diamonds by AAA and for good reason – the service and the amenities are some of the best I have ever had. Pure luxury and relaxation is guaranteed at Grand Velas.

From the moment you arrive, you know you are in good hands. Fresh hibiscus juice was brought to me, as were my check-in papers, so I could check in while sitting in the lovely open-aired lobby. No trip to the check-in desk required. My bags were wisked away to my room and the friendliest bell boy ever escorted us up to our suite, talking to us the whole time about all of the great amenities we would enjoy here. Once inside the room, I was instantly surprise with the size of it. Two queen beds, and a large sitting area; a massive bathroom with double sinks, enormous Jacuzzi tub and separate shower and toilet quarters; and then a large outdoor patio with a luxurious day bed, overlooking the ocean. The room was much larger than many of my friends’ apartments.

The amenities in-room are also as impressive as its size. There is a pillow menu – yes, that’s right, a menu to order your pillow. There are eight different pillows to choose from, of different material and stiffness, so that you can get the best night sleep possible wile at Grand Velas. There is an iPod dock, a nice flat screen TV, a stocked mini-bar that is refreshed daily, and of course loads of lovely bathroom amenities, from bath salts to tooth brush and tooth paste.

The first thing I did was look out from the patio over the blue ocean and sparkling resort pools below. The second thing I did was look at the room service menu. At Grand Velas the all-inclusive price really does include everything, even unlimited room service delivery from a rather large menu of delicious food. They even have bottle service! Order a big bottle of tequila or maybe a sparkling wine to your room, and the friendly staff will bring it right up.

The food at Grand Velas was unlike any all-inclusive food I have had in my previous experience. Tune in tomorrow, when I will discuss the various restaurants at Grand Velas, as well as the other luxury offerings at this Mexican paradise.

The Ranch at Rock Creek, set to be one of Montana’s premier luxury ranches, will make its grand debut in May 2010, following a soft opening period from January to April 2010. Situated on 6,600 picturesque acres to the southeast of Missoula and west of Butte, The Ranch at Rock Creek offers guests an unparalleled luxury escape, while also providing an authentic Montana ranch experience.

Guests at the ranch have a choice of rustic, yet elegant accommodations, ranging from nine luxury rooms in the Granite Lodge; the couples’ Trapper Tent, a half cabin, half tent accommodation complete with private hot tub; as well as two private homes—the five-bedroom Bear House and the three-bedroom River House. Additionally, the luxury tents that lie along the banks of Rock Creek provide an unforgettable experience under the big Montana sky and a one-of-a-kind rustic charm, with four family tents and four couples’ tents located on the banks of Rock Creek. These tents, measuring 550 to 790 square feet, provide ample walking room and space for luggage and other belongings. Finally, adjacent to the tents lies the 1,000-square foot Bluebird cabin, a quaint one-bedroom accommodation, featuring a mini spa, complete with sauna and large bathtub, as well as a spacious front deck overlooking a meadow and large screened-in back porch, ideal for private massages amongst the peaceful Montana setting.

Each of the rooms and tents reflect a balanced blend of Western antiques with the modern amenities and comforts that guests expect from a five-star resort. The lodge rooms are inspired by an old railway station hotel, and are a great option for bridal groups or large families who wish to be at the center of ranch life.

Trapper Tent is by far the most unique and secluded accommodation on the ranch, great for couples seeking a romantic retreat. Trapper guests are treated to a luminous tented bedroom, connected by a tented breezeway to an intimate cabin featuring a small kitchen and spacious bathroom, complete with a rock-floored shower facing the stream. For those chilly Montana mornings and evenings, the cabin is equipped with a gas fireplace, radiant heat flooring and a wooden hot tub with a heated rock bench located right off the tent’s deck.

Serving as the heart of the ranch, Granite Lodge also houses a communal great room, grand dining room, 2,100-square foot spa and the Silver Dollar Saloon, complete with a four-lane bowling alley, game room, dance hall and movie screening area.

The ranch’s full-service spa features five serene treatment rooms with expert therapists on hand, and a menu offering massages and facials after an adventurous day on the ranch, or a pre-wedding day of beauty for those indulging in the ultimate destination wedding. The spa, in conjunction with the ranch opening, launched the latest product lines from Red Flower, an organic beauty and spa line, and utilizes these new products in the various massages and facials available.

“People come to Montana to enjoy its simple beauty and laid back lifestyle—and the Ranch is the perfect complement to that while also providing the services and comforts of a high-end resort,” said owner James Manley.

After a long day on the ranch, guests work up a hearty appetite and turn to Executive Chef Joshua Drage’s gourmet adaptation of delectable, yet traditional ranch fare. Utilizing a variety of organic ingredients, Chef Drage’s culinary program remains in line with the ranch’s philosophy, one of simplicity, authenticity and comfort. The ingredient-driven cuisine is enhanced by the integrity of local Montana producers, ensuring the dishes remain honest, bold and healthy, which truly defines life in Montana and on the ranch.

With the natural bounty of Montana as a backdrop, guests at The Ranch at Rock Creek can partake in a wide range of activities and adventures to complete their ranch vacation. Rock Creek has long been considered a fly fisher’s paradise, with access to just under four miles of private water on this pristine wild trout stream (the ranch observes a catch and release policy). Guests may venture off-ranch for professionally guided float fishing trips on several of Montana’s blue-ribbon streams, such as the Blackfoot, Bitterroot, Big Hole and Clark Fork (all-day fishing with a guide off the ranch is an additional expense). Additionally, the property boasts a number of hiking, biking and riding trails for guests to enjoy Montana’s natural beauty and wildlife. Sporting clays, archery and paintball are also available.

Come winter, the ranch will offer a host of activities that showcase Montana at its best, including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice skating and sledding through the snow. Additionally, Discovery Basin, an alpine ski destination just 30 minutes from the Ranch, offers a grand introduction to Montana’s powder, lack of crowds and stunning backdrops. With its summit at 8,100 feet above sea level, this mountain’s 2,000 acres, 1,670 feet of vertical drop and wide range of terrain appeal to all skill levels.

After scouring the West for over 25 years, Manley had all but given up his quest for the perfect ranch for his family to enjoy, and then he found Rock Creek. Built as a private home and functioning ranch, Rock Creek was exactly what he had been searching for. It was not until shortly after purchasing it that he realized its full potential as a guest ranch and began the two-year expansion to the existing property. Today, The Ranch at Rock Creek is a blend of the original ranch structure with new embellishments, including the Granite Lodge and River Camp.

The Ranch at Rock Creek is located one hour and fifteen minutes southeast of Missoula and one hour from Butte in western Montana. Rates for rooms in the Granite Lodge begin at $800 per person, per night, and rates for the luxury tents begin at $825 per person, per night. Trapper Tent is $1,150 per person based on double occupancy, while the log homes begin at $5,000 per night. The Bluebird cabin is available for $1,200 per person, per night. All rates include accommodations, meals, beverages (including spirits, beer and wine) and all activities. Spa treatments and reserve wines are available at an additional charge.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Now that turkey day is upon us, it’s time to start thinking about our winter vacations. We love the Hilton Waikoloa Village (in fact, one of our editors just visited this paradise in October) and think its a great plkace to take your family for the holidays, especially because of all the special events they arrange. Read about holiday activities here:

The resort kicks off the holiday season with a little Hawaiian flare, beginning November 27 when the traditional Legends of the Pacific Luau transforms into a holiday celebration. Guests are entertained by an authentic Polynesian style hula and fire dancing while enjoying the tastes of home during a traditional holiday meal.

Just when you think this trip couldn’t get any better, it does. After a quick planned resort room change, I awake to calm breezes and soothing echoes of golfers enjoying a predawn game at the Hilton Grand Vacation Club—King’s Land. Now not to confuse you, we are still on the Hiltons sprawling 62-acre Pacific playground, we have just relocated our rooms to enjoy a two night stay at the resorts newest hotel venture.

Currently, phase one is opened with limited activities available to its guest. But not to worry, once completed visitors can fully indulge in championship golf courses, pools, barbeques, water activities and outdoor exercise classes, all while experiencing a truly lavish home away from home stay. With choice one-and-two bedroom suites, we each received the royal treatment and stayed in our own brand new two-bedroom suite. I don’t think I have ever been the first to stay at a hotel before.

Upon entering, beautiful dark wood floors lead you though the fully-equipped kitchen affixed with stainless steel appliances to the living room and out to a fully furnished lanai. The master suite, located just off the living area, has a plush king size bed and bathroom that ladies—we all need. Well, the tub for sure. The second bedroom offers plenty of sleeping with two double beds and a much deserving second bath. No need to share a bed with you sibling on this vacay. The kicker, all rooms are affixed with flat panel televisions. Yup, I thought that would win over the kids.
As I gear up for our final full day on the island, I realize it involves an 11 hour excursion to the Volcano National Park. Not bad knowing we will walk on lava. With our naturalist Danny behind the wheel, we were on our way. Roughly three hours in, and a few stops, we reached the park and wow was it breathtaking–green, lush and cooler in temp. (Hawaii has several different climatic zones, all of which we eventually traveled through during this trip) And it really didn’t feel like three hours with Danny telling stories about Hawaii and its culture along the way. We spent the next several hours touring the park, walking through lava tubes, checking out Hawaii’s rain forest and overlooking a volcanoes culver. I found it fascinating to actually witness plumes of white smoke billowing out of an inferno more than 2,100 degrees two miles deep in the earth. And to know one day that volcano will erupt again and possible take out the landscape we once walked on.

With the clock striking noon we decided to break for lunch and set a plan for the afternoon. We agreed to load into the van and drive towards the parks shoreline. As we winded down the mountainside we saw just what Mother Nature is capable of doing—miles and miles of black lava now covering a once green landscape. At the edge of the park, along the shore, the road ends in part due to an active lava spill that’s flowing into the ocean and causing scolding steam to rise hundreds of feet in the air. If you are daring, you can walk a little ways down the road for a closer view but park officials eventually stop everyone at a certain point.

As we load into the van for what we think is the final time, one can only assume the car ride home was quiet, (and you are correct) until we pulled up to small donut shop only known by natives. There we enjoyed warm sugary doughnuts called malasades. Wow, were they yummy. Now back to the resort for our final dinner.

After a restful night’s sleep I awoke to the sounds of my Blackberry both buzzing from my preset alarm and incoming e-mails. After all, we are still working. With two feet planted soundly on the ground I glanced over my itinerary and realized a bathing suit was today’s only main article of clothing needed, how easy can that be right. No makeup, no hair products…just shower and go.

At 6 a.m. I shuffled downstairs to Kimo Bean, located on the Hilton Waikoloa’s main level to meet my team. Yup, we all looked a little sleepy. Nothing some home grown, fresh brewing Kona coffee couldn’t fix. First stop breakfast on the lanai at Dolphin Quest. As we grabbed coffee and croissants—watching the sun rise over Hawaii—we began to hear the playful sounds of dolphins greeting us from their paralleling blue lagoon. Our first adventure on the Big Island was to swim with dolphins. No need for coffee to kick us into high gear, the idea alone led us to our feet.

Suited up and divided into two teams we met our marine mammal experts eager to have us interact with one of the oceans most delicate, amazing and intelligent creators. Waist high in water we were able to assist the trainers in feeding, commanding and playing with the dolphins. An experience I have to say is unlike anything I have ever done in my life.

After an amazing hour with the dolphins, we were off to the black sandy shorelines of Kona to catch a ride on the Glass Bottom boat tour. Drifting between the shoreline and the oceans sandbar, we peered into the center of the boat catching glimpse of indigenous fishes, somber sea turtles and colorful coral reef dubbed Hawaii’s “tropical rain forests of the sea.”

As we played bumper boats with our private charter awaiting us offshore, we efficiently jumped from one boat to another without any hiccups. Kudos to us! (Although if really wasn’t as hard as it sounds.) As we made our way to the front of the vessel, we were introduced to the captain and his second in command. Within moments the wind was in our hair and we were cuddling the coastline off the black sandy beaches known to Kona for an afternoon of snorkeling.

After endless afternoon of fun in the sun it was back aboard the boat for lunch and a leisurely sail home. Once upon shore we headed back to the resort for an hour of pampering at the Kohala Spa before breaking for a little r-and-r before dinner.

As the sun set and the tiki torches lit the way, we loaded into our shuttle bus for an evening at Sansei restaurant, located in the Queens’ Marketplace. There we enjoy a pre-fix tasting of delish soup, sushi rolls, and meat—traditional island cuisine. For desert we found ourselves at Macaroni Grill. There oh-so-yummy tiramisu, chocolate and lemon cakes paired well with the evening’s dessert drinks. After eating so much good food everyone became sleepy and rightfully so, for many we were nearing the wee hours of the morning. The only thing on everyone’s mind was sleep.

Stay tuned for day three tomorrow.

For many, a business venture to another state requires hours of chit-chat around an oval table inside a conference room. As a journalist, our business ventures are a little different. Allow me to tell you how.

It began with an e-mail confirmation and an all day travel itinerary that would eventually land me on an island far, far away better known as The Big Island, yup Hawaii. I was thrilled as this would be my first time going to Hawaii.

After landing at Kona International Airport, a small rustic-looking airport, we quickly began de-boarding the plane on the tarmac. I have to be honest in all my travels I have never done that. In fact, I only thought that happened in the movies. How’s that for novelty. After a quick introduction to my five fellow journalists joining me on this adventure, we were quickly whisked to a nearby waiting limo.

Piled in and ready to go we exited the airport and were quickly awe-struck by our current surroundings—miles upon miles of black lava fields. After a short 20 minute drive we arrived at the Hilton Waikoloa Village and greeted by our “storytellers,” as they are referred to. Over the next few days, these ladies would direct us where to go and when to be there by. Something we all agreed, we loved.

After settling in to our very posh rooms, each offering picturesque ocean views, we would regroup for dinner. And, like any great gathering, one must begin with a toast—in our case that was Mai Tai’s, Hawaii’s drink of choice.

After a few laughs, our night began in true Hawaiian style—by the sound of a horn created using a cong shell. A talent none of us dared to try.

With Mai Tai’s in hand, we step inside the boat that would soon begin our “Dine Around” tour. (This boat would be our only transportation to and from each dinning destination)

Stop one: appetizers at Kirin Chinese Restaurant. Overlooking the resort and its water canal we enjoy shrimp, crab cakes and assorted rolls while meeting with the many people who help create the fun, vibrant vacay destination it is today. I must say they are all very passionate about their line of work. Next on the dinning tour was Imari, an authentic Japanese steakhouse. Greeted with warm towels to refresh our hands, we enjoyed soup and salad, several assorted rolls and tender steak for dinner. Just superb. Our final stop was Kamuela Provision Company, better known as KPC for dessert. But just as the boat docked you began to feel the steady beat of a drum. As we made our way around the corner we were front and center of our own personal Luau, which was just about to start. What they didn’t tell us was some of us would be part of the luau. And yes I was one. At first, fear came over me, and then I realized how much fun it could be, so I did it. It was well worth it.

As we made our way to our final dinning destination, Kamuela Provision Company, better known as KPC, we say outside overlook the Pacific Ocean. Here we enjoy three of the restaurants most highly regarded desserts and watched a true Hawaiian flame thrower perform before calling it a night. Remember its now midnight and for those of us based on the West Coast it’s 3 a.m., but for those based out of New York it’s 6 a.m. Needless to say, we were all a little tired.

Stay tune tomorrow to read about day two in Hawaii.

One of the last things I want to share about Terranea Resort & Spa is the amazing activities you will find here. I was surprised to see the resort totally sold out over Labor Day, but once I wandered around and realized all the things to do, I understood why so many families had chosen to visit for their long weekend.

First off, the pools:
The family pool is like a dream for kids. It’s safe, big, had ocean views and a slide – what more can a little one ask for? The children seemed to be having the time of their lives at the family pool, so I steered clear and went right to the adult Cielo pool, a modern lap pool right down by the ocean, where chic lounge furniture and cool music created a great pool scene. The Cielo bar and cafe offers great drinks and food to enjoy in this adults-only atmosphere.

But if you are more of an ocean person, head a little farther down to the seaside and you’ll find a lovely littel beach, which is a havorite spot for local scuba divers and snorkelers. Sun yourself on the beach loungers or hop right in the water and splash around in the cool Pacific.

One of my favorite activities is the 9-hole golf course, The Links at Terranea. This par-3 walking course is surprisingly challenging, yet easy enough that get some great short game practice in and get to walk away feeling accomplished, not frustrated. I had never walked a course before (I know, I know, I’m lazy and from Scottsdale, where walking is unheard of), but really enjoyed it, especially since there is an ocean view from just about every hole. It’s a very relaxing way to spend the morning or afternoon.

I also noticed a lot of families practicing and taking private lessons on the courses practice facilities, which were in top shape. And I did take a good long look in the small pro shop too and ended up buying a couple of items as souvenirs from my trip.

Over all, there is no shortage of activities at Terranea and it’s truly an ideal spot for a family vacation or a romantic weekend trip for two.
