McCain and Obama at InterContinental, Paradise Valley, Arizona

Either by a bizarre twist of fate or an intentional act of upstaging, President Barack Obama is said to be staying at Arizona’s Montelucia InterContinental Resort & Spa, the same resort where Senator John McCain is holding his fundraiser event tonight to kick of the campaign for his fifth Senate term. InterContinental staff would not confirm this, but the rumors around town are pointing in this direction.
The McCain event has been booked for some time now, while its clear that Obama’s stay would only have been scheduled in recent weeks or days. He is in town tonight after he plans to sign the stimulus bill in Denver today. Obama will be speaking at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning at Dobson High School about his plans to aid in helping homeowners avoid foreclosure.
The irony is that the InterContinental Montelucia, the seemingly choice hotel for both politicians, is actual in foreclosure proceedings itself.
It is traditional that American Presidents stay at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa (every President since Herbert Hoover has), but perhaps that fact that the Biltmore was host to McCain’s Election Night event has tainted this historic hotel for Obama. Even in that case, it may have been more appropriate to choose any of the multitude of luxurious Scottsdale and Phoenix resorts over the resort where his ex-opponent is hosting an event. Seems like a bit of a party crash.
But on another note, at Media That Deelivers, we are selfishly happy they are both at Montelucia. Why? because this means that the two most powerful men in America will be reading our magazines. Arizona Foothills magazine is the ONLY in-room publication at the Montelucia, meaning that our magazine is in every room there. Obama, McCain and their entourage (which has apparently sold out the resort) will all be flipping through our pages. Now this is the demographic we like to reach!
