Park City Introduces New Day School

I love Park City so much that any news I see catches my attention. Usually the news is about resorts opening or ski conditions, but this week a new school will open, which should be of interest to any of the lucky families who live in this great town.
Park City’s newest independent school will introduce itself to the community at the Legacy Lodge at Park City Mountain Resort on the evening of Thursday, February 4 from 5:00 to 6:30pm.
Serving students aged 3 through Grade 9, Park City Day School unifies two of Park City’s finest and most respected existing independent schools. It will open for its inaugural year in the fall of 2010 with an anticipated enrollment of approximately 215 students.
“This is really the beginning of a new era of educational opportunity for the children of Park City,” said Kristi Cumming, founding Board Chair for the new school. “Park City is a unique and dynamic place, and we are working hard to make sure that Park City Day School reflects the attributes of this world-class community. If you love Park City, you’ll love Park City Day School.”
Created through a community-based effort to combine The Colby School and Park City Academy into a single independent school serving the entire Park City area, Park City Day School’s annual per-pupil expenditure will be approximately three times the state average. Maximum class size will be 18. Scholarships and financial aid will be available.
“Park City Day School students will be intellectually stimulated and creatively inspired,” commented Charles Sachs, Head of School. “And the quality and commitment of our faculty will rival the best independent schools in the country.”
With degrees from Colgate and Middlebury and graduate work in education at Kansas, Connecticut, and Harvard, Mr. Sachs has previously headed Barstow School in Kansas City and Pulaski Academy in Little Rock. Now in his third year in Park City, Mr. Sachs noted that by combining the extensive resources and best attributes of two successful existing schools, Park City Day School will achieve a critical mass of students and sufficient capitalization to provide students with the broadest possible array of challenging academic and successful life options.
“The types of people who choose to live in this amazing community tend to want more out of life,” Ms. Cumming added, “Our expectations and hopes for our children’s educations should reflect that same high standard. Park City Day School will be an exceptional school for an exceptional community.”
