As the weather warms and ideal golf conditions steal the daily forecast, Valley golfers will begin flocking to the numerous courses around our golfing metropolis. An upcoming charity event will allow golf and philanthropic enthusiasts to suffice both of these longings with one swing.

Taking place on Sunday, Mar. 29, the second annual John Lepito Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Ocotillo Golf Resort.

The tournament was inaugurated last year in order to honor John Lepito, a former golf professional at Ocotillo Golf Resort who passed from pancreatic cancer in October of 2006. John was known for his friendly smile, love for people, love for the game of golf and was well-respected in the golf community.

“John was a wonderful person and a great supporter of The First Tee of Phoenix,” said Hugh Smith, Executive Director of The First Tee of Phoenix. “It is with great honor that our chapter was able to lend a helping hand during the inaugural event in 2008, and we are proud to be a part of the tournament this year as well.”

The four-person scramble format will commence with a 1 p.m. shotgun start, and proceeds from the tournament will benefit The First Tee of Phoenix.

During last year’s event, First Tee members helped with registration and were stationed on the par-3 holes to hit shots with the groups as they came through. Through last year’s contributions, The First Tee of Phoenix received a donation of $8,000 in John’s name.

To register for the John Lepito Memorial Golf Tournament, visit www.ocotillogolf.com. Participants who join in before Mar. 20 can play for $129 per player, after Mar. 20 rates are $139 per player (rates include 18 holes of golf, cart, range balls, dinner, drink tickets and contests). If you can’t make it our to support this great cause, hole sponsorships are also available for $250 per hole.
