I’m all for splurging on the latest and greatest equipment to hit the golf scene. To me, paying upwards of $400 on a new driver in hopes of harnessing some of the much needed Big C (confidence) is a justifiable expense. It is somewhat in line with the mainstream adage coined by Mastercard … confidence in your game on the course: priceless.

However, there are some expenditures that don’t directly assist during the moment of inertia, which have been rubbing me the wrong way. Behold the mystery of the thousand and some dollar golf bag phenomenon. In such a down market, it is hard to fathom that golfers (even with their sometime generous spending habits) would break the bank for a designer cart bag. But still, I have been eyewitness to a few of these said bags in the past couple recession-apparent months. Don’t get me wrong, I too would love to tuck my Scotty Cameron away at night in its very own Italian leather compartment. But is it necessary? At least not for most.

The beauty of these bags has got to be their biggest draw. Take this bag from Lucaldo (below). Their Tuscan Soul Pro Staff Golf Bag sold by various international dealers retails for about $2,120 U.S. It comes equipped with six club dividers and a matching hood cover. You can complete the look with $300 club head covers. www.lucaldo.com.

Another company producing luxury-level club containment apparatus’ is Italy-based leather factory Piero Tucci. Known for their fine leather craftsmanship, the company has golf bag designs that have women golfers swooning. I, too, am mad about this “Royal Highness” classically-lined Italian leather bag. Not sure how it would hold up to dirt, but the bag’s white canvas/embossed leather trimmings take me back to golf’s simpler days.  The bag’s stylistic elements have traces of the times Hogan, Snead and Jones dominated the sport. That timeless look can be yours as well for $1,721. www.pierotucci.com.

For those with a more modest budget, I love the always bright and cheery designs by Keri Golf. The bags retail anywhere from $85 to $375 and exude a high fashion flair and an almost Tory Burch-influenced look. www.kerigolf.com.
