Capella Telluride Looks Forward to Winter
By Hayley • Sep 1st, 2009 • Category: Sports and Leisure

Looking forward to winter? I am. I can’t wait to get my skis out and head the mountains. I’ve been wanting to get to the new Capella Telluride – Telluride’s newest resort for the discerning traveler, complete with ski-in/ski-out locale and complimentary Nordic Lounge and ski valet.

To get you pumped up for some powder, Capella Telluride’s Lead Personal Assistant, Cassie Hood, suggests three day’s worth of winter fun to complement a trip to the mountains:
Day 1: Winter fly fishing along the San Miguel River
Below Telluride’s towering mountain range, the San Miguel River continues to gush in wintertime. Deep holes remain unfrozen in the 35 degree water, giving anglers a chance at wild rainbow and cutthroat trout. Capella’s guests are escorted to exclusive private waters with an expert guide for a day on the river. Rental equipment is organized in advance so they needn’t worry about packing fishing poles alongside ski poles.
Cool tip for a cool catch: Capella Telluride’s Executive Chef Kenny Gilbert will cook-to-order the day’s bounties at Onyx restaurant, creating a truly personalized dining experience. Or, at the guest’s request, he might use the catch of the day in his signature dish, Franchaise of Trout, paired with fontina cheese risotto, asparagus, oven dried tomatoes and lemon caper emulsion.
Day 2: Skiing and a sleigh ride dinner
Thanks to Capella’s local relationships, guests skip the morning rush and meet their ski instructor in the comfort of the Capella Living Room (matched in advance thanks to a pre-arrival conversation with their Personal Assistant). After a day on the famed slopes of Telluride Ski Resort, guests snuggle into a sleigh for an exhilarating ride behind a snowcat, headed to Gorrono Ranch. There, they savor a western-style dinner around the campfire. Upon return to Capella Telluride, they cozy up in front of the Capella Living Room’s roaring fireplace to sip the day’s complimentary hot cocoa special (favorite infusions include hints of orange zest).
Cool tip for families: Children three years and younger ride and dine for free.
Day 3: Horseback Riding
Guests shed their ski boots for cowboy boots and join local cowboy Roudy Roudebush at Telluride Horseback for a day of exploration. While rides can range from one hour to overnight, the six hour day ride to nearby Alta is highly recommended. Guests will find the historic ghost town – originally a gold mining settlement – a rich addition to their time in Telluride.
Cool tip for the sore rider: The Spa at Capella Telluride’s Spirit of the Mountain’s Massage is the perfect way to soothe aching muscles after a day in the saddle. Inspired by an ancient Thai practice to welcome warriors home from battle, the deep heat massage incorporates a steamed poultice of jasmine, sweet basil and mountain lavender.
Reservations at Capella Telluride are available online at www.capellatelluride.com or by phone at (877) 247-6688.
