Terranea Resort

Terranea Resort

I can remember the first time I heard about Terranea Resort & Spa – probably back in 2007, long before the resort was built. A brand new ocean-front resort in California is big news in my business, so all of us editors were intrigued to see what would become of this grand plan, especially in light of our dark economy. I kept up with the building progress and was very excited when it finally opened in June to rave reviews.

Well to understand just how fabulous this place is, one must visit in person, which I did over the Labor Day weekend. The pictures and recent newspaper articles that peppered the summer papers, just don’t give it justice.

I arrived at Terranea on Saturday afternoon, after a lovely drive through Palos Verdes, where Terranea is located. The lushness of its grounds and the watery ocean backdrop at Terranea were the first two things that pleased me as I drove down its long drive–coming from dry Arizona, the green and blue hues were a welcome respite.

After valeting my car, I entered a stunning lobby. To one side was check-in and to the other was a grand lobby bar area, with plush furnishings and an oversize fireplace. And right ahead, an enticing balcony overlooking the Pacific.

One quick check-in later and I was now in my guest room, a posh ground floor retreat with a walk-out to Terranea’s well-manicured lawns and a view of the sea. The rooms are modern, yet have a classic beachy feel, complete with lamps in the bathroom that are actually encrusted in sea shells. Top of the line linens, Lather bath products and a very sound-proof room make for a truly comfortable stay. Now I mention sound-proof only because the day I arrived at Terranea I was staying in a middle-of-the-road hotel in Manhattan Beach and wasn’t comfortable at all, due to the constant noise of doors opening and closing, kids talking and “housekeeping” calls. In fact the week before I had stayed at a high-end hotel in Scottsdale and the same thing kept me up at night: the noise in the hallways. So, I was truly appreciative of Terranea’s well-built facility and silent, relaxing rooms.

On my first evening, exploring the ground was my first task. Miles of oceanside paths are perfect for exercise or dog-walking. (Pets are allows at the resort, so I brought my dog and met many people who had brought theirs too – we all appreciated the pet-friendliness of Terranea). After a long evening walk, I sat with my husband on the patio and watched the moon rise over the cliffs to the south.
Read my blog tomorrow to find out about the various activities that Terranea offers as well as the divine dining scene.
