Spring is officially here and I am making my plans to head to San Diego for Memorial Day. I wanted to see what type of festivals or special event might be happening while I am in town, and I was surprised to see such a long list of community events this spring and summer. San Diego and the surrounding area has some great offerings, so take advantage of the cheap airfare to California right now and go have some fun in the sun.

  • The San Diego North County city of Fallbrook celebrates its nickname as “the avocado capital of the world” during the 23rd Annual Fallbrook Avocado Festival on Apr. 19.  Visitors will enjoy arts and crafts, games and foods featuring the delicious, tropical green fruit.  www.fallbrookca.org
  • CowParade, the world’s largest public art event, will bring 50 life-sized fiberglass cows to La Jolla from Mar. 15 to June 15.  Designed by local artists, the cows will be displayed in public settings for exclusive photo opportunities and viewing.  www.cowparadesandiego.com
  • Seaport Village will come alive with a celebration of street performers during the Spring Busker Festivalon Apr. 18 – 19. In a battle of entertainment, extraordinary, one-of-a-kind performers such as jugglers, sword swallowers, comedic stuntmen and Didjeridoo players will take to Seaport Village’s cobblestone streets for a weekend of outdoor family amusement.  www.seaportvillage.com
  • During the 36th Annual San Diego Adams Avenue Roots Festival, visitors can enjoy vintage blues, folk, Appalachian, country, bluegrass and Celtic music performed by roots artists on seven outdoor stages. Held at Adams Park in University Heights, the free event is held Apr. 25 – 26 and includes a beer garden, food, crafts and more.  www.adamsaveonline.com
  • San Diego’s EarthFair on Apr. 19 in Balboa Park represents almost every type of environmental cause out there, including organic foods, wildlife preservation, alternative energy vehicles and cute pet adoption services.   • Art Walk 2009 on Apr. 25 – 26 takes guests on self-guided tours into the working studios, galleries and outdoor venues of artists and performers in downtown San Diego’s authentic Little Italy neighborhood.   The free event showcases several types of media, including painting, photography, sculpture, architecture, design and dance.  www.artwalksandiego.org
  • The Carlsbad Spring Village Faire, the largest one-day street fair in California, takes place this year on May 3 and features hundreds of exhibitors, international food booths and children’s rides in downtown Carlsbad.  www.carlsbadca.org
  • The Escondido Downtown Street Fairefeatures live entertainment as well as over 600 booths showcasing arts and crafts, a farmers market and international foods. The Street Faire is held May 17 in downtown Escondido. www.ci.escondido.ca.us
