Art at West Hollywoood’s Andaz Hotel

One of my favorite July 4th destinations is Los Angeles, and I am always looking for unique things to do while on my visits to Hollywood. I like to stay right in the action, and a great place to see and be seen is Andaz West Hollywood. Right on Sunset, this hotel used to be the Hyatt, and has undergone a gorgeous renovation that is worth checking out. Whether you are staying at Andaz or not, here is a cool activity that will get you in the doors of this new hotel:
With a nod to a notorious past of music and mayhem, the Andaz West Hollywood returns to its artful “Riot Hyatt” roots with an air of refinement when it opens “Art Seen at The Andaz,” a rotating collection of artwork by Southern California artists, which started on Monday, June 14, 2010.
“Art Seen At The Andaz” creates a destination for art appreciation outside museums and galleries. With art installations rotating biannually, the elegant atmosphere of the hotel’s interior gives artists the opportunity to showcase their works in a construct that is both an art exhibition and a community gathering space for guests, passersby, and art aficionados alike.
The Andaz has thoughtfully chosen beguiling artworks that reflect the avant garde spirit of the hotel and is permanent residence to several original pieces, namely, Jacob Hashimoto’s The Departure, a 12-foot high multi-layered tapestry engaging both the Sunset Strip and the RH lounge, Kirsten Everberg’s striking painting White Birch Grove, East (After Tarkovsky) that adorns the major wall of the RH Restaurant, and Anne Collier’s evocative depiction of a woman’s eye that immediately attracts guests’ attention in the hotel’s lounge.
“The Andaz wanted to make its space a laboratory for local artists to publicly display their work,” said Merry Norris, Curator for Andaz West Hollywood. “Utilizing the Andaz as a venue for exhibiting contemporary art creates a unique setting and a new destination to see art in Los Angeles.”
Artworks on display and available for purchase includes: Robert Walker’s Allthemoreso, an abstraction of Buddhist joy wheels using a mosaic-inspired layering technique; Benny Chan’s huge aerial photographs of Los Angeles’ TRAFFIC!; Danny First’s Five Black Heads challenge viewers to engage with them in dialogue, silent or otherwise; David McDonald’s sculpture of musical evolution, Honshirabe; Daniel Wheeler’s tributes to Southern California’s ubiquitous swimming pools by freezing a peek at the world through a liquid lens, as captured by his GULP #013 ivy and GULP #066, and Macha Suzuki’s Just A Tree, a rather mysterious self portrait.
After making its Sunset Strip debut just over a year ago, the Andaz West Hollywood‘s renovation has transformed the famed rock n’ roll “Riot Hyatt” into a venue-of-choice for LA tastemakers and the Hollywood elite . Filled with local art and iconic images, the highly acclaimed Chef Sebastien Archambault, helms the Southwest France cuisine inspired restaurant, RH. The Andaz West Hollywood features a stunning roof-top pool and sundeck with grand views that reach from the Hollywood Hills to downtown Los Angeles and the beaches. Steps from the Sunset Strip’s most lauded music venues and boutiques, the Andaz West Hollywood’s “Art Seen At The Andaz” is the perfect destination to appreciate the art and culture emerging from Southern California.
