It’s easy to get carried away during these hot summer months with pool parties and fun in the sun, but don’t forget to show your locks some love. The summer heat coupled with pool chemicals or salt water can be detrimental to the health of your hair. Kendall Ong, owner of Mane Attraction Salon in Phoenix, shares his tips for protecting your hair during the hot summer months.

Flatirons

1. Try to avoid blow-drying, curling, or flat ironing by getting a fabulous cut that works with your hair and allows you to simply air dry it. If you can’t snub your styling tools, be sure to apply a heat protectant to seal the cuticle of the hair.

2. Summer weather and swimming can wreak havoc on your hair, so it’s important to take it up a notch when it comes to home conditioning. Kendall recommends using a moisturizing conditioner instead of a protein conditioner because protein can sometimes further dry out your hair.

3. Hair is like a sponge and will absorb the chlorine and harsh chemicals from the pool. Additionally, saltwater is corrosive and also unsafe for your hair. In order to protect it, run conditioner throughout damp hair and cover with a swimming cap before going swimming.

4. Kendall says if you’re a frequent pool hopper, you should use a clarifying shampoo instead of your regular shampoo for the summer. He recommends Aveda Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser, which will remove chlorine and minerals while still maintaining a balance of moisture.

5. Sunscreen isn’t only for our skin. Kendall says you can get a product such as Bumble and Bumble Styling Balm, which will give hair luster and control while shielding your hair from UVA and UVB rays.
