Selfie-CenteredBugg

Have you noticed the new art installation in the Quad by the fountain at the Scottsdale Quarter? There are some fun and exciting photographic sculptures of portraits of our favorite local mini celebrities. #Selfie-Centered was created by local Tempe artist and teacher Peter Bugg commenting on the “Selfie”. He produced a series of 4 life-size vinyl photo sculptures of local personalities which include Robert Sentinery the Editor and Publisher of Java Magazine, Tania Katan the Curator of Performance Arts at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Caitlin Turner globe trotting Yogi, and last but not least Oscar De Las Salas a Fashionista and Stylist. Everyone takes “selfies” now days and Bugg has found a great way to bring attention to this global social phenomenon, through the use of these fun and playful sculptures that give the appearance of real people taking a selfie or allows visitors to take a selfie with the sculptures! “With #Selfie-Centered, Bugg continues to expand his oeuvre of artwork dissecting and examining popular culture and our collective relationship with photography as a means of communication”, states Scottsdale Public Art (SPA). According to the Bugg, “this installation responds to the popularity of taking and sharing self-portrait photographs going on to note that in “November of 2013, the word selfie was named the word of the year for 2013 by Oxford Online Dictionaries.”

These fun sculptures are apart of the Scottsdale Public Art’s IN FLUX program, which brings temporary art installations by Arizona artists to various locations around the valley. The Scottsdale Quarter generously sponsored this project and has been a location for three influx projects over the past two years. #Selfie-Centered will be on display through March 2015 so be sure to stop by the Scottsdale Quarter and experience this installation for yourself and don’t forget to take a Selfie!
