Trend – Vivid Lips

Despite the prodding and pushing by a few colorful friends of mine, I confess I am a neutralist. Rarely will you see me showing off my latest brightly hued fashions, instead I love a basic palette of blacks, whites, creams, navys and grays with an occasional blue or green thrown in. Growing up and even well into the 80’s I wore a rainbow of shades and rarely did I ever find a color I didn’t like, but something happened in beauty school. Perhaps it was the daily uniform of black and white that seemed to make dressing a no brainer.

Either way I play out my color daydreams with my home décor and a case full of cosmetics that I use on clients every day. This season I am hooked on the juicy fruit bright shades of lipstick. Now I know not everyone can wear them and quite frankly if you wore these shades in the 60’s, 70’s or 80’s proceed with caution as they can look as dated as they do fresh if done the wrong way.

In fact about a month ago when I was testing out shades for a photo shoot I tried on about a dozen samples from magenta pink to tangerine orange (which immediately got a thumbs down from the hubby).

So if you are feeling bold enough to try some a punch of color on your pucker here are some of the seasons best picks.

Patti Dubroff the fames celebrity makeup artist (one of my favorites) created a fresh spring look on Kate Bosworth for the Hollywood Style Awards last month. She paired Makeup ForEver Aqua Lip Waterproof Lip Liner is Fucshia with Clarins Rouge Prodige Lipstick in Coral Tulip. This look works so well with Kate’s sleek hair and pastel dress.

If you prefer a coral or orange tone as shown on the models at Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring Collection, Makeup For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in number 40 is a great choice. For the runway Dick Page used a bright coral tone and topped is off with an orange pigment to add impact on the runway. Try MAC Pigments which come in an array of colors and can be pressed onto the lips with a firm lip brush.

When wearing a vivd shade on the lips remember to keep the rest of the face polished but simple with a sheer foundation, neutral eye shadows and sheer blush in a pink or peach shade.
