7 Runway Worthy Ponytails

With all the attention that the top knot is getting these days the always classic ponytail has suddenly taken a back seat. But before you count this versatile and always chic do’ out take a peek at these seven great versions that Refinery 29 tapped fresh from the runways.

The Dominatrix Pony

This look works best on hair that is one day dirty and touched up with a flat iron.

Apply styling cream from root to tip, “Brush hair with a boar-bristle brush and pull all of your hair back tightly into a pony situated at the crown. Secure with a bungee or elastic. Wrap a section of hair around the elastic and secure with a wrap” Or do like super-stylist Odile Gilbert did to models at Jason Wu’s fall ’12 show and wrap some bondage tape (yes, you read that right) around the base. It will definitely keep it authentic!

The Offsides Pony

While you may think of a side ponytail as totally ’80s, the updated version is much lower, which gives it a chicness. It’s mature and sophisticated, but with a hint of whimsy.

“The key to this look is to eliminate all separation between the hair and the neck when pulling it into the pony,” says Roszak. “The point of this look is a sleek appearance. Pull hair into a tight, low pony and secure with an elastic. Once this is done, manipulate the pony to the side, then tame flyaways with a styling cream.”

The “She’s Come Undone” Pony

“This low pony is the easiest of them all! To recreate this look, a girl just has to pull her hair into a pony and slide her fingers down until there are about 4 inches left until the tip, then secure with an old piece of lace or ribbon for a rough, modern, but still girlie look. Voila!”

The Twisted Pony

“The way to style an undone low pony like this is to start with natural texture in the hair,” explains Roszak. “For hair that is straight or has a natural wave, apply salt or surf spray and finger dry on a low setting with a blowdryer. Pull your hair into a ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic, then separate the hair above the pony, pulling the ends through the separated section to give it a knotted look. Wrap the loose hair around the elastic and finish by tucking the ends through the elastic.”

The Puffy Pony

To score this look part your hair, then gather into a low pony and secure it with an elastic. Using a boar-bristle brush, gently backcomb the hair in your pony to create a fluffy look. Take a section of hair from underneath the ponytail, about an inch thick, and very gently tease it to add a bit of grip, then wrap it around the elastic and pin the ends with bobby pins underneath the ponytail.

The Beribboned Pony

Once thought of as old-fashioned ribbons have been making a big comeback as hair accessories lately.

“This pony is all about texture. To add a tiny bit of texture, apply a dab of Oribe Rough Luxury Molding Wax to your palms, flip your head over, and mess the hair up with your hands. Then, gather hair into a pony [at the lower back of your head], allowing pieces to fall out around the neck and face, and secure with a hair tie.”

The Straight Edge Pony

For you mane masters out there, this tricky, unconventional pony provides a bit of a challenge. We spotted it at Christian Siriano’s fall ’12 show and got the scoop straight from the creator, Aveda global creative director, Antoinette Beenders.

Start with hair that’s been blown straight. Part your hair in the center, then section it off into a lower and upper section. Secure the top section with an elastic to keep it out of the way, then divide the bottom hair into two sections and create an inverted braid on each side. The braid should go from your temple all the way down to the nape of your neck, following the natural curve of your hair line. Secure the braids with an elastic, leaving the ends loose.

Release the top section of hair, letting it fall over the braids so that they are no longer visible. Pull the hair back, as if you are creating a low ponytail, making sure to keep it wide and flat across the head. Using a metal comb, secure the hair in place over the braids by pushing it in horizontally at the nape of the neck. Repeat with another comb right next to it. Pin any stragglers or wispy bits with a bobby pin, then spray your whole ‘do with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray to keep everything in place.
