Before we drink his wisdom further, though, you may be wondering what, exactly, is a craft beer? Per the Brewers Association, craft beers “are produced with 100-percent barley or wheat malt or use other fermentable ingredients [read: rye] that enhance (rather than lighten) flavor.” In addition, craft beer must come from a craft brewer, which the Brewers Association defines as small (producing fewer than two million barrels of beer per year), independent (with less than 25 percent of its company owned or controlled by an alcoholic beverage industry member that is not a craft brewer) and traditional. Entities producing such brews include regional craft breweries, microbreweries, brewpubs and contract brewing companies. The craft beer segment made up 3.6 percent of the share of all U.S. beer sales in 2006.
