Style Substance Sophistication

In the past, walking either course at Troon North was an exhausting prospect. Given the former layout of the courses, many of the green complexes were separated from the subsequent tee box by long stretches of cart path. Now, the Pinnacle course has a continuous layout with far less distance separating the holes. The course, which doesn’t return to the clubhouse until the 18th hole now, also became a par-71 layout as a result of the change.

Bunkers were redesigned and in some cases removed on holes from both courses, and new putting surfaces were added to every green during the two-year project under Weiskopf’s direction. The new 17th hole on the Monument course was also shortened by 20 yards and made into a par 4 that now measures 495 yards long from the black tees. After years of study, Weiskopf and Troon Golf C.E.O. Dana Garmany decided that such changes would enhance what have long been rated two of the best courses in Arizona. “Both courses can now be played exactly as the land dictates,” Weiskopf says.

It’s a change most golfers will want to see to believe.

OFF THE MARKET
About two years ago, Troon North Golf Club was put up for sale with an asking price “north of $90 million” as reported by Bill Huffman in the East Valley Tribune. Today, however, the for-sale sign is gone; and Troon Golf, the Scottsdale-based golf course management company that owns Troon North, remains the owner and operator.
